Nigeria’s council of state has decided to carry on with its presidential elections on February 14, 2015.<\/p>\n

Nigeria’s national security advisor, Sambo Dasuki had earlier called for a postponement of the poll to\u00a0ensure the voter card distribution is successfully completed since the nation will be using biometric cards.<\/p>\n

Calls for a delay in the country’s elections was influenced by mounting attacks from the Islamist militant group, Boko Haram.<\/p>\n

The council of state, comprising ex-leaders, elections officials , presidential candidates and other key stakeholders met in the capital, Abuja, on Thursday to discuss the election.<\/p>\n

Reports however indicate that no decision was taken to change the date.<\/p>\n

APC campaign media head Malam Garba Shehu said a delay would have caused a crisis and “made Nigeria the laughing stock of the civilised world”, in a statement seen by Reuters.<\/p>\n

The BBC indicated that elections will not be conducted in Boko Haram-controlled areas.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Some 69 million Nigerians out of a total population of 177 million are eligible to vote.<\/p>\n
