There are certain things all bosses dread to hear. \u201cI lost the account,\u201d \u201cThere\u2019s a big mistake,\u201d and \u201cI think the building is on fire,\u201d would all qualify, but I\u2019m talking about sentences that may seem innocuous to you, but can be a big deal to your boss.<\/p>\n
Consider each of these sentences \u2014 and how you can turn them around to stay on your boss\u2019 good side.<\/p>\n
\u201cAre you sure you want to do that\u2026?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n You don\u2019t want to come across as teaching your boss something he or she already knows. Tread carefully when schooling your boss on anything. If you feel you have to say something, approach the topic with the assumption that your boss may have overlooked or forgotten something \u2014 not that he doesn\u2019t know how to do his job.<\/p>\n \u201cDid you see what so-and-so just did? She is just <\/strong>so<\/em><\/strong> hard to work with!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n Save the interpersonal drama for your friends and family members, because your boss doesn\u2019t want to hear about it. He certainly doesn\u2019t want you to be a tattle-tale, and he doesn\u2019t want to know about how much you dislike your coworkers. Unless someone you work with has made a major violation of company policy, or a big mistake in their work, keep your personal grievances, well, personal.<\/p>\n \u201cI didn\u2019t want to bother you in case the problem worked itself out\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n Chances are, if you\u2019re saying this sentence, something has gone horribly wrong, and your boss didn\u2019t see it coming, because you didn\u2019t give her the heads up. Most bosses would much rather know about potential problemsbefore<\/em> they happen than get blind-sided and have to play catch up. When alerting your boss to a potential problem, be sure to include what you\u2019re doing to prevent it.<\/p>\n \u201cIf you don\u2019t do this, I\u2019m going to quit!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n Ultimatums are a bad idea in pretty much every situation, but especially when it comes to talking to your boss. Are you sure<\/em> you\u2019re as irreplaceable as you think you are? Besides the fact that it comes off sounding juvenile, it might make your boss choose the nuclear option and decide you\u2019re not worth the alternative. It\u2019s fine to draw a line in your mind \u2014 if you need to quit, you need to quit \u2014 but don\u2019t threaten.<\/p>\n \u201cAs a Millennial\u2026\u201d or \u201cPeople in my generation\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n Yes, he gets it: you\u2019re younger than he is. But chances are, your boss doesn\u2019t want to be reminded of his age \u2014 or yours. Unless you\u2019re specifically asked your opinion as a younger person, don\u2019t bring up your age or generation. If you\u2019re suggesting a change, couch it in terms of how it will benefit the company, not just the Millennials.<\/p>\n \u201cThat can\u2019t be done.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n If your boss wants something to be done, she doesn\u2019t want to hear that it can\u2019t<\/em>be done. Plus, saying that something can\u2019t be done is an easy way out. Instead, focus on what you can do to make it happen \u2014 research, experimentation, brainstorming new ideas, and so on.<\/p>\n \u201cI <\/strong>need<\/em><\/strong> a raise.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n To be clear, you should absolutely ask for a pay rise when you feel you deserve one, but be careful how you phrase your request. Nearly everyone would like more money, so instead of saying you \u201cneed\u201d one, start by outlining your value to the company, your accomplishments, and responsibilities.
