{"id":88001,"date":"2015-02-03T12:39:47","date_gmt":"2015-02-03T12:39:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=88001"},"modified":"2015-02-03T11:41:38","modified_gmt":"2015-02-03T11:41:38","slug":"oyelowo-tv-ignoring-black-actors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=88001","title":{"rendered":"Oyelowo: TV &#8216;ignoring&#8217; black actors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">British actor David Oyelowo has criticised TV bosses for ignoring &#8220;the real&#8221; British history by not casting black actors in period dramas.<\/p>\n<p>The 38-year-old, who plays Martin Luther King in Hollywood&#8217;s new film Selma, left Britain for the US in 2007.<\/p>\n<p>He told Radio Times magazine a lack of roles for black actors in Britain had left him and others frustrated.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I shouldn&#8217;t have to feel like I have to move to America to have a notable career&#8221;, he says.<\/p>\n<p>The Golden Globe best actor nominee claims many talented black actors who chose to say in the UK aren&#8217;t getting &#8220;the opportunities worthy of them&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>He says: &#8220;I can&#8217;t say the same of my white peers&#8221;, adding &#8220;there&#8217;s a string of black British actors passing through where I live now in LA.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape full-width has-caption\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"js-image-replace\" src=\"http:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/625\/media\/images\/80745000\/jpg\/_80745270_downton.jpg\" alt=\"Some of the cast of Downton Abbey\" width=\"624\" height=\"351\" \/><figcaption class=\"media-caption\"><span class=\"media-caption__text\">David Oyelowo say black actors are largely ignored in shows like Downton Abbey<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;We make period dramas in Britain, but there are almost never black people in them, even though we&#8217;ve been on these shores for hundreds of years.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s frustrating, because it doesn&#8217;t have to be that way&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The former Spooks actor says he once took a historical drama based on a black character to a British executive but was told &#8220;if it&#8217;s not Jane Austen or Dickens, the audience don&#8217;t understand&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>He says: &#8220;I thought, &#8216;Okay, you are stopping people having a context for the country they live in and you are marginalising me. I can&#8217;t live with that. So I&#8217;ve got to get out'&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, Imitation Game star Benedict Cumberbatch highlighted the lack of diversity on British screens.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape full-width has-caption\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"js-image-replace\" src=\"http:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/625\/media\/images\/80745000\/jpg\/_80745930_cumber.jpg\" alt=\"Benedict Cumberbatch\" width=\"624\" height=\"351\" \/><figcaption class=\"media-caption\"><span class=\"media-caption__text\">Benedict Cumberbatch has also complained of a lack of diversity on British screens<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But his comments were overshadowed by the Sherlock actor&#8217;s use of the term &#8220;coloured&#8221;, for which he later apologised.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, David Oyelowo defended Cumberbatch&#8217;s comments.<\/p>\n<p>Oyelowo says: &#8220;The difference between myself and Benedict and Eddie Redmayne is they can choose to live here and still have a Hollywood career.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Because though they can do American movies, their bread and butter in Britain is period films. But had I stayed here, I wouldn&#8217;t be in Selma. That&#8217;s just a fact.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Oyelowo has also played supporting roles in Lincoln, The Butler and Rise of the Planet of the Apes.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Idris Elba and Lenny Henry were among stars who told TV bosses thatthey were &#8220;dismayed&#8221; at the poor numbers of people from ethnic minority backgrounds working in the industry.<\/p>\n<p>Others including Broadchurch writer Chris Chibnall, comic Harry Hill and actor David Harewood also signed an open letter calling for a pot of money for black, Asian and minority ethnic programmes.<\/p>\n<p>The letter was sent to BBC director general Tony Hall, ITV chief executive Adam Crozier, and the bosses of BSkyB, Channel 4 and Channel 5.<\/p>\n<p>The BBC has announced a plan to set up a \u00a32.1 million &#8220;diversity creative talent fund&#8221; to help fast-track shows by ethnic minority talent onto TV.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Source: BBC<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>British actor David Oyelowo has criticised TV bosses for ignoring &#8220;the real&#8221; British history by not casting black actors in period dramas.
