{"id":85126,"date":"2015-01-23T20:51:48","date_gmt":"2015-01-23T20:51:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=85126"},"modified":"2015-01-23T20:53:45","modified_gmt":"2015-01-23T20:53:45","slug":"review-policy-condom-usage-among-students-marie-stopes-ges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=85126","title":{"rendered":"Review policy on condom usage among students \u2013 Marie Stopes to GES"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Reproductive Health Advocacy Group, Marie Stopes International Ghana, has charged the Ghana Education Service (GES) to review its policy against the promotion of condoms at both basic and high schools in the country.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;uqlyCZgHg7u4MvBJzUln6YWeUIrkO2TY&#8221;]According to them<strong>, <\/strong>most students at these levels are sexually active, and\u00a0\u00a0the need to advise them on issues around unprotected sex.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Speaking to <strong>Citi News<\/strong>, the Project Manager of Marie Stopes International Ghana, Leonard Gobah said young people need information on contraceptives to reduce their risks of contracting sexually transmitted infections (STIs).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He argued that students at the basic and high school levels\u00a0could engage in sex, which can result in teenage pregnancy explaining that \u00a0\u201ca lot of sexually transmitted infections happen in the schools because they have started having sex.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cSo how do we protect them? We are saying that that policy should be looked at so that we can provide information and services for students so that they can protect themselves from STI\u2019s and unwanted pregnancies,\u201d he stressed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He argued that reviewing such policy could help in a way of \u201cinforming young people about their sexual and reproductive health issues. You know that in this part of the world talking about sex and reproductive health is very difficult for people especially when the communication is between adults and their children or the younger ones.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cSo we aim at demystifying those things so that young people can openly discuss issues around sex when they have problems,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>GES response <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But the GES\u2019s National Coordinator for School Health, Kate Opoku, indicated that her outfit is still opposed to the distribution of contraceptives to these minors.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe know they are indulging in sexual activities but we want them to get the right persons to do the demonstration for them,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">She also said GES would be willing to offer support whatsoever to assist in educating students on the facts about their sexuality and also teach them life skills to help them set goals for happy and healthy future lives.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">She was however quick to add that the service with the Ghana Health Service would partner NGO\u2019s like Marie Stopes International to explore the option of just educating students on contraceptives.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">By: Kumi Obed Afari\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reproductive Health Advocacy Group, Marie Stopes International Ghana, has charged the Ghana Education Service (GES) to review its policy against the promotion of condoms at both basic and high schools in the country.
