The Bishop of the Wa Catholic diocese, Most Rev. Paul Bemile has said that for Ghana to achieve the needed growth and development Ghanaians must change their attitude to leadership.<\/p>\n
According to him, \u201cmost Ghanaians assume leadership positions with the intention to lord it over others and to amass wealth for personal gains.\u201d<\/p>\n
[contextly_sidebar id=”FAHdFnZQFWKEEd2S2oayI2ToiPx7gM89″]The Bishop made these in a speech read for him by Rev. Fr. Edward B. Tengan at the first matriculation ceremony of MacCoy College of education at Loho in the Nadowli-Kaleo district of the Upper West region.<\/p>\n
He bemoaned the lack of critical thinking in schools and encourages the development of mature moral values.<\/p>\n
Hew opined, \u201cpeople go through such institutions and grow up to be mere reflectors of other\u2019s thoughts and thus are incapable to discriminating between truth and error.\u201d<\/p>\n
Bishop Bemile advised curriculum developers in the education sector to move away from the conception of education as \u201ctraining of the memory.\u201d<\/p>\n
According to him, they should rather strive towards \u201cthe underlying principles of the MacCoy College of education which are directed towards social, physical, spiritual and mental development through both practical and intellectual preparation for good service to communities.\u201d<\/p>\n
The principal of the school, Principal of the MacCoy College of education, Rev. Fr. Yelletuo Peter Paul, said the school was established by the Wa Catholic Dioceses after a social audit it conducted in basic schools in the Upper West region revealed worrying teacher-pupil ratios.<\/p>\n
The audit which was conducted in 2010 to access the physical and financial gaps between needs and resources available for local development in education revealed that pupil-teacher ratio in the UW region stood at 91:1 for Kindergarten, 72:1 for primary and 47:1 for JHS.<\/p>\n
According to Fr. Yelletuo, \u201cthis worrying situation compelled the church to urge her sons and daughters to devote themselves generously to the whole enterprise of education with the special aim of helping to bring more speedily to people everywhere, the worthy benefits of education and training\u201d.<\/p>\n
64 trainees took part in the Matriculation ceremony to start the MacCoy College of education.<\/p>\n
