{"id":82965,"date":"2015-01-16T17:00:58","date_gmt":"2015-01-16T17:00:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=82965"},"modified":"2015-01-16T20:02:32","modified_gmt":"2015-01-16T20:02:32","slug":"galamsey-induced-water-shortage-hits-50-communities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=82965","title":{"rendered":"Galamsey-induced water shortage hits 50 communities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>About 50 communities in Asunafo South in the Brong Ahafo region and Atwima Mponua District in Ashanti Region have been hit by severe water shortage.<\/p>\n<p>This is due to the activities of illegal miners along the Desre River in the Brong Ahafo region.<\/p>\n<p>A disgruntled resident who spoke to <strong>Citi News<\/strong> said the challenge has affected \u00a0business operations of residents in the area.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Illegal miners have destroyed our waters. For the past five months, we don\u2019t have water, we don\u2019t even have water to irrigate our cocoa farms. We are pleading with government to come and help us because illegal miners have destroyed our only source of water,&#8221; he stated.<\/p>\n<p>Another \u00a0said : \u201cFor the past year we have been trying to stop the galamsey operators. Now the river is muddy and we cannot even use it \u00a0to spray our farms&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We don&#8217;t get any water to drink because of what has happened to Desre. We don\u2019t have other sources of water to drink.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/illegal-mining-alarming-in-ghana.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4026\" src=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/illegal-mining-alarming-in-ghana.jpg\" alt=\"illegal-mining-alarming-in-ghana\" width=\"630\" height=\"472\" srcset=\"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/illegal-mining-alarming-in-ghana.jpg 630w, https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/illegal-mining-alarming-in-ghana-300x224.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Illegal mining has been a major problem for government in recent times, \u00a0many of the water bodies in the country have been destroyed \u00a0by the mining.<\/p>\n<p>In many parts of Ghana including the Northern Region a number of people have either been left injured or dead in clashes between residents and illegal miners.<\/p>\n<p>Chiefs in the Upper West region,<span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong> recently expressed concerns<\/strong><\/span> over the rising\u00a0interest and the acquisition of mining concessions in the Upper West Region.<\/p>\n<p>According to the chiefs, most of these concessions were granted without the involvement and consultations of traditional authorities.<\/p>\n<p>The Lands Commission in 2014 <span style=\"color: #333333;\">expressed concerns<\/span> over the increase in illegal mining operations in\u00a0 Wa in the <a href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2014\/08\/21\/surge-in-galamsey-destroying-wa-lands\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong>Upper West Regional capital.<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Commission said the activities of the \u201cgalamsey\u201d miners\u00a0 are \u00a0destroying the vegetation in the region.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>By: Marian Efe Ansah\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>About 50 communities in Asunafo South in the Brong Ahafo region and Atwima Mponua District in Ashanti Region have been hit by severe water shortage.
