The Members of Burkina Faso Parliament have agreed to a 50% pay cut of their salaries.<\/p>\n
[contextly_sidebar id=”B7hF4R5plvCUYDZwFpZ57qFkTavFmZjg”]On the average, the monthly salary of workers in Burkina Faso is about $150 but it was revealed that the country\u2019s lawmakers were receiving more than $3,000 a month.<\/p>\n
This revelation caused public outrage on social media but the MPs are optimistic that the pay cut will promote good governance.<\/p>\n
They are also hopeful that it will restore confidence in the nation\u2019s democracy during its year-long transition to elections.<\/p>\n
The current Parliament is a replacement of the old National Assembly which was dissolved after Blaise Compaore was ousted as President.<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n He had ruled the country since 1987 after he came to power through a coup but his attempt to amend the constitution to extend his 27-year rule.<\/p>\n The situation escalated into mass protests which led to burning of the country\u2019s Parliament House while the MPs were in the process of effecting the amendments.<\/p>\n The BBC reports that members of the 90-member CNT are paid a gross salary, attendance fees, office allowances, healthcare supplements and fuel costs.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n By: Efua Idan Osam\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana
