The University of Ghana chapter of the Teachers and Educational Workers\u2019 union (TEWU)\u00a0 has been accused of misappropriating about GHC 1.5 million in welfare dues, within a period of five years.<\/p>\n

According to the leader of the Democratic Workers\u2019 Front (DWF), the campus group making the claims, Robert Ngambire, TEWU has failed to include the welfare expenditure in the account the Union they published .<\/p>\n
\u201cThe fact is the money has not be accounted for from 2010 up to 2015 which constitute the five years DWF is talking about,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u00a0According to him the union accepted the fact of not including the welfare account even though it was important adding, \u201cthe TEWU confessed in the general meeting that the account they brought did not include welfare account and each member is paid GHC nine monthly but as we stand today there are about two thousand eight hundred and forty-eight members\u201d he disclosed.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe disappropriation of funds is the reason why elections to elect new Executives have delayed, he lamented<\/p>\n
But responding to the allegations, Chairman for Legon branch of TEWU \u00a0Ken Botchway, admitted that the local Union did not submit the expenditure on Welfare but stated that the monies collected were used to cater for the needs of members.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis money does not sit down because it is the same money that they give workers end of year package, it is used to give retirees as token when they are going on pension, it is the same money when some body is bereaved that they give him or her something\u201d<\/p>\n
He argued that the accusation is factless adding \u201che is not having the facts\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cwhat happened was that the Trustee of the union travelled and the Chairman then of the union had an appointment\u00a0 and they are the signatories of our account,\u201d he disclosed.<\/p>\n
