{"id":81744,"date":"2015-01-13T06:51:00","date_gmt":"2015-01-13T06:51:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=81744"},"modified":"2015-01-13T16:21:06","modified_gmt":"2015-01-13T16:21:06","slug":"ug-distance-education-students-angry-fees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=81744","title":{"rendered":"UG distance education students angry over fees"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Some Distance Education students of the University of Ghana (UG) are unhappy with some levies being charged by the school in their academic user fees.<\/p>\n<p>According to the students, they are being made to pay these monies but do not enjoy the services of the said levies.<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;b0RU5fZeZUcSblxMuBAp5FiLlJzR0MjB&#8221;]They are therefore calling on the management of the school to urgently review downwards, the levies to relievethem of their financial burden.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to <strong>Citi News<\/strong>, some of the students who pleaded anonymity expressed their frustrations over this development.<\/p>\n<p>One of them entreated the school authorities to take a critical look at the component of the school fees \u201cso that those that are not justifiable will be taken out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He claimed that some students are deferring their courses because they can no longer pay the \u201chigh school fees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another student also told <strong>Citi News<\/strong>, \u201cwe will like some justification in the component of the fees\u2026I would like the university management of the Distance Education to work on those things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He mentioned that there is a field trip component of the fees \u201cbut I don\u2019t see why every student should just pay that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The President of UG\u2019s Distant Education Student Representative Council (SRC), William Lastey on behalf of the affected students appealed to management of the university to correct these anomalies because it will prevent some of the students who cannot afford from continuing with their education.<\/p>\n<p>He explained saying, \u201cthe field trip is purposely for level 400 students who are supposed to engage in this academic exercise but we have a situation whereby even level 100s, level 200s, level 300s and even some level 400s who are even not doing long essays and filed works are also being charged.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He described the situation as \u201cunjustified\u201d adding that the SRC has \u201cexpressed that concern to management that if that is not checked, it is really going to serve as a disincentive\u2026there is a cause for alarm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>By: Efua Idan Osam\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana<br \/>\n<a class=\"twitter-follow-button\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/osamidan\" data-show-count=\"false\">Follow @osamidan<\/a><br \/>\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\">\/\/ <![CDATA[\n!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0],p=\/^http:\/.test(d.location)?'http':'https';if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=p+':\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js';fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document, 'script', 'twitter-wjs');\n\/\/ ]]><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Some Distance Education students of the University of Ghana (UG) are unhappy with some levies being charged by the school in their academic user fees.
