{"id":80639,"date":"2015-01-09T05:46:18","date_gmt":"2015-01-09T05:46:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=80639"},"modified":"2015-01-09T05:47:05","modified_gmt":"2015-01-09T05:47:05","slug":"wa-central-prison-conveys-convicts-in-public-transport","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=80639","title":{"rendered":"\u00a0Wa central prison conveys convicts in public transport"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Wa Central prison has been moving inmates in and out of the facility on public transport, <strong>Citi News<\/strong> investigations have revealed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The prison officers sometimes commute long distances with convicts in some instances because the facility&#8217;s vehicle has broken down.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This has resulted in security challenges with \u00a0inmates sometimes attempting to escape on such trips.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The situation has compounded the already existing problems the prison is faced with, such as overcrowding.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;4naAmQrfYmkjX7ZbkQSxMksRhgAQ1Ha6&#8243;]ADP. Victor K. Douchebe, the Commander of the Wa Central Prison, shared his frustration in an interview with <strong>Citi News.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThis is supposed to be a central prison, but my brother it\u2019s just the name .The facility is lacking a lot of the things that will qualify it as a central prison. We have no single serviceable vehicle, there is no residential accommodation for most the staff. The cells are overcrowded,\u201d He lamented.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He \u00a0warned of an imminent implosion if immediate steps are not taken to decongest the prison. He said \u201cboth officers and the facilities here are over stretched beyond acceptable levels because of the high number of the inmates we have\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The commander was worried that the situation is adversely affecting the lives of the prisoners and also poses a serious challenge to the efforts of his men in their bid to offer \u201ccorrectional and skills training services\u201d at the facility.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ghana as a signatory to the United Nations Charter on the Standard Rules For The Treatment Of Prisoners is enjoined to guard against torcher and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment of prisoners.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But ADP Douchebe was unhappy that prisoners in the country still struggle to survive on a paltry GHC 1.80p which is provided daily by government for their upkeep.<br \/>\nHe appealed for support and called for a review of the country\u2019s penal system that will consider community service for minor offences.
