{"id":80380,"date":"2015-01-08T07:37:00","date_gmt":"2015-01-08T07:37:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=80380"},"modified":"2015-01-08T07:38:48","modified_gmt":"2015-01-08T07:38:48","slug":"arrests-as-france-hunts-gunmen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=80380","title":{"rendered":"Arrests as France hunts gunmen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"story_continues_1\" class=\"introduction\">Police in France have made seven arrests as they hunt for two named suspects over the deadly attack in Paris on staff at a satirical magazine.<\/p>\n<p>The seven, thought to be associates or family of the suspects, were detained in the towns of Reims and Charleville-Mezieres, as well as in the Paris area.<\/p>\n<p>Photos were released of two brothers suspected of involvement in the attack.<\/p>\n<p>France is mourning the 12 people killed when Charlie Hebdo was targeted by gunmen shouting Islamist slogans.<\/p>\n<p>A minute&#8217;s silence will be observed at midday across the country and the bells of Notre Dame in the capital will toll.<\/p>\n<p>Arrest warrants were issued for Cherif and Said Kouachi, said to be &#8220;armed and dangerous&#8221;. Many carried placards reading &#8220;Je suis Charlie&#8221; (I am Charlie) in solidarity with the victims.<\/p>\n<div class=\"caption full-width\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/news.bbcimg.co.uk\/media\/images\/80126000\/jpg\/_80126682_025315148.jpg\" alt=\"Police in Reims, east of Paris. 8 Jan 2015\" width=\"624\" height=\"351\" \/>There was a huge police operation in Reims overnight but officials gave no details<\/div>\n<p>Eight journalists &#8211; including the magazine&#8217;s editor &#8211; died along with two policemen, a caretaker and a visitor when masked men armed with assault rifles stormed the Charlie Hebdo offices.<\/p>\n<p>The magazine has angered some Muslims in the past by printing cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad. The offices were firebombed in 2011.<\/p>\n<p>The gunmen were heard shouting &#8220;we have avenged the Prophet Muhammad&#8221; and &#8220;God is Great&#8221; in Arabic.<\/p>\n<p>French media, citing police documents, initially named a third suspect as Hamyd Mourad, 18, who later handed himself in to police. He reportedly surrendered after hearing his name on the news.<\/p>\n<div class=\"videoInStoryB\">\n<p class=\"caption\">President Hollande has described the dead as heroes, as Gavin Hewitt reports.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong><span class=\"cross-head\">France &#8216;targeted&#8217;<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>President Francois Hollande said the country&#8217;s tradition of free speech had been attacked and called on all French people to stand together.<\/p>\n<p>In a sombre televised address late on Wednesday he said: &#8220;Today the French Republic as a whole was the target.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Thursday&#8217;s national day of mourning is only the fifth held in France in the past 50 years.<\/p>\n<p>The attack took place as the magazine was holding its weekly editorial meeting. In addition to the dead, 11 people were wounded, some seriously.<\/p>\n<p>Corinne Rey, a cartoonist, said the gunmen had entered the building after forcing her to enter the code to open the door.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They said they belonged to al-Qaeda,&#8221; she said, adding they had spoken in fluent French.<\/p>\n<p>Witnesses said they heard as many as 50 shots fired both inside the Charlie Hebdo office and on the streets outside.<\/p>\n<div class=\"caption full-width\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/news.bbcimg.co.uk\/media\/images\/80126000\/jpg\/_80126674_025316083.jpg\" alt=\"Vigil in New York. 8 Jan 2015\" width=\"624\" height=\"351\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"caption full-width\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"caption full-width\">This vigil in New York echoed the slogan &#8220;Je suis Charlie&#8221; (I am Charlie) in tribute to the victims<\/div>\n<p>The gunmen were filmed on amateur video shooting one injured police officer at point blank range in the head on the pavement outside.<\/p>\n<p>The attackers fled to northern Paris before abandoning their car and hijacking a second one, police say.<\/p>\n<p>World leaders swiftly condemned the attack with US President Barack Obama offering to help France track down those responsible.<\/p>\n<p>Al-Azhar University in Cairo, Sunni Islam&#8217;s leading centre of learning, called the attack &#8220;criminal&#8221; and said Islam denounced &#8220;any violence&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The Arab League also condemned the attack.
