{"id":79991,"date":"2015-01-07T08:34:30","date_gmt":"2015-01-07T08:34:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=79991"},"modified":"2015-01-07T17:25:32","modified_gmt":"2015-01-07T17:25:32","slug":"mahamas-2-year-reign-plagued-by-crisis-and-demonstrations-iea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=79991","title":{"rendered":"Mahama\u2019s 2 year reign plagued by &#8216;crisis and demonstrations&#8217; &#8211; Gyampoh"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As President John Mahama marks two years in office today, a Senior Political Science Lecturer at the University of Ghana Dr. Ransford Gyampoh has delivered a damning verdict on the performance of the President&#8217;s administration.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, President Mahama\u2019s government has been battling with severe &#8220;crises&#8221; which has brought untold hardship unto Ghanaians.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Gyampoh chronicles several happenings in the last two years ranging from the economic situation, the power crises and various corruption cases as some of the major challenges the Mahama led government has had to battle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a government that has suffered severe crises over the past two years. When we talk about governance, we are simply talking about demonstrations, protests, which are not necessarily motivated politically.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You can see all manner of people participating in such strikes so its been trouble tight for President Mahama and I\u2019m hoping that in the next two years as we prepare for another election, he will be able to do more to redeem his image,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking in an interview with <strong>Citi News<\/strong> the Governance Analyst charged the President to in the next two years put in measures to improve the lives of\u00a0Ghanaians.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_79994\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-79994\" style=\"width: 480px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/gyampo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-79994 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/gyampo.jpg\" alt=\"gyampo\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/gyampo.jpg 480w, https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/gyampo-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-79994\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ransford Gyampo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>\u00a0Economic hardship will erode Mahama&#8217;s\u00a0achievement if &#8230;- Council of World Bishops<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;7EPPxn57qHz5B7OpZlP9LZsWsW0V09dl&#8221;]The Council of World Bishops had<strong><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2014\/12\/27\/mahamas-achievement-might-erode-archbishop\/\" target=\"_blank\"> earlier predicted that President Mahama&#8217;s<\/a><\/span> <\/strong>achievement might go unrecognised if the prevailing\u00a0the prevailing economic hardship continue to linger.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at a consecration service , Archbishop Ofori Atta said\u00a0\u201cwe seem to be in hard times economically; the load shedding and erratic power supply is having such a retrogressive effect on our economic activities coupled with increases in taxes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He however expressed the firm belief that the country\u2019s challenges will be resolved if President Mahama showed leadership in resolving the challenges.<\/p>\n<p><strong>State of the economy under Mahama&#8217;s\u00a0administration<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ghana has been facing economic challenges including rising budget deficit, high inflation, inconsistent power supply among others.<\/p>\n<p>The Private Enterprise Federations (PEF) has for instance\u00a0described the year 2014 as the most difficult year for businesses across the country.<\/p>\n<p>An Afrobarometer released in 2014 indicated that about 76% of Ghanaians blame government for failing to improve their living standards.<\/p>\n<p>The respondents said government is performing very badly or fairly badly in improving the living standards of the poor. The survey also revealed that majority of Ghanaians say their current economic conditions have worsened over the years.<\/p>\n<p>A series of<a href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2014\/11\/12\/hundreds-turn-afags-aagbe-w%CD%BB-demo\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong> demonstrations have been staged<\/strong> <\/span><\/a>by various civil society groups, political opponents and pressure groups, to protest what they believe is government\u2019s lack of ideas to solve the problems.<\/p>\n<p>Government in a bid to resolve the challenge initiated talks with the (IMF) in August for a possible bail out.<\/p>\n<p>Aside various\u00a0economic challenges, the country in 2014 recorded a number of corrupt scandals including the payment of over 7 million to non-existent service personnel and the decision by the Commissioner of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) decision to spend about 200,000 dollars on rent alone.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Economy will do well\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Despite several concerns raised over the state of the economy, President Mahama believes that<span style=\"color: #333333;\"> Ghana&#8217;s economy will do well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In his new year message to Ghanaians, President Mahama encouraged Ghanaians to be hopeful about the coming year and <a href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2014\/12\/31\/stop-cynicism-hopeful-2015-mahama\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong>stop the cynicism.<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe new year holds a wide expanse of possibilities. Let us not enter 2015 with any cynicism or sense of limitation. Let us choose to fill the days ahead of us with hope and not despair.
