{"id":711,"date":"2014-02-18T08:47:03","date_gmt":"2014-02-18T08:47:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citi.hatuasolutions.com\/?p=711"},"modified":"2014-02-18T08:47:03","modified_gmt":"2014-02-18T08:47:03","slug":"sinai-attacks-islamist-claim-tourist-bus-bomb-attack","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=711","title":{"rendered":"Sinai attacks: Islamist claim tourist bus bomb attack"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"story_continues_1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/citi.hatuasolutions.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/islamist.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-712\" alt=\"islamist\" src=\"http:\/\/citi.hatuasolutions.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/islamist-300x168.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><\/a>Islamist militant group Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis has said it carried out a deadly bomb attack on a tourist bus in Egypt&#8217;s Sinai peninsula on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>The group warned it was part of its &#8220;economic war&#8221; against the current Egyptian authorities, which it described as &#8220;traitors&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Three South Koreans and an Egyptian were killed in the attack.<\/p>\n<p>The Sinai peninsula has become increasingly lawless since President Hosni Mubarak was overthrown in 2011.<\/p>\n<p>Militants further stepped up their attacks after President Mohamed Morsi was ousted by the army last year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tourism industry fears<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In a statement, Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis said one its members carried out the bombing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With God&#8217;s will we will be watching this treacherous gang of infiltrators and we will target their economic interests,&#8221; it said.<\/p>\n<p>This was the first attack on tourists in nearly a decade, raising fears that the militants have renewed a campaign to wreck the flagging tourism industry.<\/p>\n<p>The bus was reported to be heading into Israel from St Catherine&#8217;s monastery, a popular tourist destination near Mount Sinai, when it was attacked.<\/p>\n<p>South Korea&#8217;s foreign ministry said on Monday that the bus was carrying 31 tourists, plus three tour guides &#8211; two Korean and one Egyptian.<\/p>\n<p>Those who died were the two South Korean tour guides, a Korean tourist and the Egyptian driver, Yonhap news agency reported, citing the ministry.<\/p>\n<p>Fourteen other South Koreans were taken to hospital.<\/p>\n<p>The passengers were members of a church group on a 12-day tour of religious sites in Turkey, Egypt and Israel, the South Korean news agency said.<\/p>\n<p>The exact cause of the blast is not clear.
