{"id":68430,"date":"2014-11-25T11:49:46","date_gmt":"2014-11-25T11:49:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=68430"},"modified":"2014-11-25T11:51:30","modified_gmt":"2014-11-25T11:51:30","slug":"sierra-leone-ebola-workers-dump-bodies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=68430","title":{"rendered":"Sierra Leone Ebola workers dump bodies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"story_continues_1\" class=\"introduction\">Burial workers in the Sierra Leonean city of Kenema have dumped bodies in public in protest at non-payment of allowances for handling Ebola victims.<\/p>\n<p>The workers, who have gone on strike over the issue, left 15 bodies abandoned at the city&#8217;s main hospital.<\/p>\n<p>One of the bodies was reportedly left by the hospital manager&#8217;s office and two others by the hospital entrance.<\/p>\n<p>Sierra Leone is one of the countries worst affected by this year&#8217;s Ebola outbreak, with more than 1,200 deaths.<\/p>\n<div class=\"caption body-narrow-width\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/news.bbcimg.co.uk\/media\/images\/79246000\/jpg\/_79246040_79246039.jpg\" alt=\"Burial worker at Kenema\" width=\"304\" height=\"405\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"caption body-narrow-width\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"caption body-narrow-width\">Burial workers say they have not been paid risk allowances<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Kenema is the third largest city in Sierra Leone and the biggest in the east, where the Ebola outbreak first emerged in the country.<\/p>\n<p>The workers told a BBC reporter they had not been paid agreed extra risk allowances for October and November.<\/p>\n<p>The BBC&#8217;s Umaru Fofana in Freetown says the bodies have now been taken away but the workers remain on strike.<\/p>\n<p>There has been no immediate comment by the hospital&#8217;s management or the Sierra Leonean health ministry.<\/p>\n<p>The burial workers&#8217; industrial action comes two weeks after health workers went on strike for similar reasons at a clinic near Bo &#8211; the only facility in southern Sierra Leone treating Ebola victims.<\/p>\n<p>Ebola has killed more than 5,000 people in West Africa this year, mostly in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.<\/p>\n<p>The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the outbreak a global health emergency.<\/p>\n<div class=\"caption body-width\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/news.bbcimg.co.uk\/media\/images\/79246000\/jpg\/_79246819_sierraleonekenema4641114.jpg\" alt=\"map\" width=\"464\" height=\"261\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"caption body-width\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"caption body-width\">\u00a0&#8211;<\/div>\n<div class=\"caption body-width\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"caption body-width\">Source: BBC<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Burial workers in the Sierra Leonean city of Kenema have dumped bodies in public in protest at non-payment of allowances for handling Ebola victims.
