The Divine Mother and Child Foundation (DMAC) is advocating for the use of inhaled oxytocin for expectant mothers.<\/p>\n
The hormone is said to prevent hemorrhage during labour to reduce the high maternal mortality in the country.<\/p>\n
According to a release signed by DMAC founder, Edmund Duodu, the use and introduction of this new oxytocin will be very useful in promoting maternal health.<\/p>\n
The statement said, nearly 300,000 women\u00a0die every year due to pregnancy-related\u00a0causes. The risk of a woman\u00a0in a developing country dying\u00a0from a maternal-related cause\u00a0during her lifetime is 23\u00a0times higher than a woman living\u00a0in a developed country.<\/p>\n
The single biggest cause of death is\u00a0excessive bleeding during or after\u00a0birth, a condition that is\u00a0effectively managed in developed\u00a0countries using the gold\u00a0standard therapy, oxytocin, a\u00a0manufactured form of a natural\u00a0hormone.<\/p>\n
However, accessibility\u00a0to quality oxytocin in resource-poor settings is limited as current products are only\u00a0available in an injectable form requiring supply and storage\u00a0under refrigerated conditions and\u00a0trained personnel to administer\u00a0the product safely.<\/p>\n
Importance of Inhaled Oxytocin<\/strong><\/p>\n This new collaboration aims to address these issues through the\u00a0development of a heat-stable,\u00a0affordable and easy-to-administer inhaled form of oxytocin. Formulated as a dry\u00a0powder, inhaled oxytocin\u00a0eliminates the need for\u00a0refrigerated storage conditions,\u00a0while delivering oxytocin via a powder inhaler could facilitate its\u00a0administration by health workers,\u00a0birth attendants and mothers themselves.
