A Former National Security Adviser, Brigadier-General Joseph Nunoo-Mensah (rtd) has criticized Members of Parliament (MP) for importing furniture from China<\/a><\/strong><\/span> to furnish the House,\u00a0describing the move as “unforgivable.”<\/p>\n

He has urged Ghanaians to \u201cshow their anger at our Parliamentarians. What they have done is unforgivable\u2026when a parliamentarian doesn\u2019t respond to people\u2019s need you vote them out. I don\u2019t care which party he stand for.\u201d<\/p>\n

A lecturer at Asheshi University College and Chinese Policy analyst, Professor Lloyd Amoah had described the move as a \u201csymbolic mistake,\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/a> stating that \u201cour republic has deep symbolic value\u2026for arts of our country.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nunoo-Mensah speaking on an Accra based radio station said that \u201cOur parliamentarians don\u2019t think we have sufficient good carpenters in Ghana to make furniture for them, they have to go China or elsewhere and that saddens me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think our parliamentarians know what they are about. What kind of society are we building? I\u2019m really flabbergasted,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the Speaker of Parliament, Edward Doe Adjaho estimated that the cost of\u00a0<\/strong> the furnishing to be GH\u00a221,950,855<\/strong><\/a><\/span> (\u00a2220 billion).<\/p>\n

In a related development,\u00a0it has emerged that Parliament is importing more furniture from Italy<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0for their offices in the Job 600 building.<\/p>\n

Local furniture companies have criticized government for ignoring them to import what they describe as\u00a0 \u201cinferior\u201d chairs and tables from China.<\/p>\n

The speaker of Parliament,\u00a0 Edward Doe Adjaho has revealed that \u201csome Members of Leadership and MPs as well as Members of the Technical Team traveled to Italy to inspect and confirm various facilities and units of furniture.\u201d<\/p>\n
