The Majority Leader of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin says some Members of Parliament (MPs) do not last in the House because they lack the spirit of service.<\/p>\n
According to the MP for Nadowli\/Kaleo, such Parliamentarians, although highly qualified, prefer working in the private sector for material gains rather that work as law makers to contribute to the development of the nation.<\/p>\n
\u201cMany of the good materials don\u2019t last in the House because they don\u2019t have the spirit of service. They see themselves better off in the private sector and in Civil Society Organizations than sacrificing in Parliament,\u201d he observed.<\/p>\n
[contextly_sidebar id=”5n5WrmFMeTtevA7fZbOBGGxQ26hHGzau”]Alban Bagbin who spoke at a lecture organised by the Centre for Social Democracy, Ghana on Wednesday remarked that \u201cI can\u2019t compare myself to them when we talk about acquisition of properties.\u201d<\/p>\n
He clarified that seeing MPs riding in big vehicles should not be misconstrued to mean they are financially benefitting from their positions.<\/p>\n
\u201cBecause you see me in my Land Cruiser, which is my official vehicle, you will say I am enjoying, but it is not so,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The Majority leader therefore recommended a change in attitude among politicians and Ghanaians because the development of the nation is paramount.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe need to cleanse our minds, we need to reinvent some of our value systems,\u201d he advised.<\/p>\n
Speaking at the same forum, a former Minister of Justice and former Member of Parliament in Germany, Professor Herta Daubler-Gmelin said good governance and rule of law are the main characteristics of social democracy.<\/p>\n
She said African nations must endeavour to keep \u201cabsolute democracy, the vision of a social, just, equal and democratic society in the times of neo-liberalism.\u201d<\/p>\n
