Just a day after Members of Parliament (MPs) returned to the House to use their luxurious new furnishing, the chairs and tables imported from China have started breaking.<\/p>\n

Some of the MPs on Tuesday raised questions about the quality of the furniture from China<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, and questioned why leadership of the House did not allow local companies to produce them.<\/p>\n

Just a little pressure on the chairs during Wednesday\u2019s sitting, saw some of the wheels under the swivel chairs fall off.<\/p>\n

According to Citi News\u2019<\/strong> Umaru Sanda Amadu who was in Parliament, MP for Asukawa, Patricia Appiagyei tried to draw the attention of the Speaker by displaying one of the wheels of a broken chair in the air.<\/p>\n

Speaking on Eyewitness News<\/strong>, the MP for Lower West Akim, Gifty Klenam said: “It was Shirley Ayorkor Botwe’s chair. As soon as she sat on it, it broke and I had to help her up.”<\/p>\n

“We tried to get the Speaker\u2019s attention but we couldn\u2019t catch his eye so the bottom line was to get the media to report to them,” she added.<\/p>\n

Mathew Opoku Prempeh, MP for Manhyia South on Accra based radio station Asemp FM also complained that his table had broken.<\/p>\n

Local furniture producers have lashed out at Parliament for importing<\/strong><\/span><\/a> furniture from China to refurbish their chamber.<\/p>\n

The leadership of Parliament explained that the importation was made due to the limited time it had to put the chamber<\/strong><\/a><\/span> in order for MPs to resume work.<\/p>\n

The Deputy Majority Leader, Alfred Kwame Agbesi argued in an interview with\u00a0Citi News<\/strong>\u00a0that the quantity\u00a0of furniture needed for the refurbishment could not have been produced on time by local furniture companies.<\/p>\n
