However, reports of gunshots at the headquarters of Burkina Faso’s State TV \u00a0in the capital Ouagadougou on Sunday have intensified fears for\u00a0the safety of Ghanaians in the country.<\/p>\n
Former leader Blaise Compaore stepped down as president<\/strong><\/span><\/a> after protests\u00a0in response to\u00a0a proposed amendment of the constitution by the Parliament, that would have extended the president\u2019s stay in power.<\/p>\n Media\u00a0reports indicate that Mr. Compaore has fled to the Ivory Coast, although he was initially thought to have entered\u00a0Ghana.<\/p>\n The army seized power on Friday after Compaore’s resignation and named Lieutenant Colonel Isaac Zida as the leader of a transitional government.<\/p>\n The country has since closed it borders to several African countries, including Ghana<\/strong><\/span><\/a> due to the political insecurity in the country.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, security personnel have had to clear\u00a0thousands of demonstrators, led by opposition parties and\u00a0civic groups who\u00a0gathered in on the streets\u00a0on\u00a0Sunday in protest of the army takeover after the resignation of President Blaise Compaore.<\/p>\n The African Union<\/strong><\/span><\/a> (AU) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) have condemned the military take over, with ECOWAS president John Dramani Mahama saying the regional bloc will not\u00a0\u201crecognize any ascension to power<\/strong><\/span><\/a> through non constitutional means.\u201d<\/p>\n <\/p>\n By: Edwin Kwakofi\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana![\"](\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/78693919_024556895-1.jpg\")
