{"id":61020,"date":"2014-10-31T13:27:46","date_gmt":"2014-10-31T13:27:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=61020"},"modified":"2014-10-31T13:32:59","modified_gmt":"2014-10-31T13:32:59","slug":"agbogbloshie-other-slums-to-be-upgraded-minister","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=61020","title":{"rendered":"Agbogbloshie, other slums to be upgraded &#8211; Minister"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Agbogbloshie slum, popularly known as Sodom and Gomorrah, and other slums in the capital will see a face-lift in a special project to be spearheaded by the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The sector Minister, Julius Debrah revealed this on the <strong>Citi Breakfast Show<\/strong> on Friday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He said government will replicate a programme adopted by Brazil to ensure that places like <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2014\/08\/19\/lost-childhood-the-story-of-the-children-of-agbogbloshie\/\" target=\"_blank\">Agbogbloshie<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0and other slums in Accra will see gradual upgrade.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;7GvpfWgKGqtMGZ2kCEmjL2acgYXMwrGG&#8221;]Agbogboloshie; a former wetland in Accra is now a slum and has also become <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2014\/08\/29\/eu-to-fund-restoration-of-agbogbloshie-dump-site\/\" target=\"_blank\">home to the world\u2019s largest electronic waste dumping site<\/a><\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Sanitation in the area is also appalling. &#8220;It\u2019s true I must admit that it shouldn&#8217;t have happened but it has happened. Just as I said we shouldn\u2019t engage in blame game,&#8221; he opined.<\/p>\n<p>The slam covers approximately four acres and is situated on the banks of the Korle Lagoon, northwest of Accra&#8217;s Central Business District with <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Agbogbloshie\" target=\"_blank\">about 40,000 inhabitants<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, most of whom are migrants from rural areas.<\/p>\n<p>Due to its harsh living conditions and rampant crime, the area is nicknamed &#8220;Sodom and Gomorrah.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to the Local Government Minister \u201cwe have a programme coming up where we have identified some of the slum areas including Agbogbloshie to try and upgrade it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWhen I went to Brazil what we found out is that, there is a whole area that is in this kind of situation\u2026they gradually start constructing what looks like flats for land good usage.
