Julia Roberts has a thing or two to say about aging\u2014and she\u2019s not holding back.<\/p>\n
In a new interview with a magazine, the actress and Lanc\u00f4me spokesperson says her surgery-free face is an anomaly in the entertainment industry. \u201cBy Hollywood standards, I guess I\u2019ve already taken a big risk in not having had a facelift,\u201d she says. \u201cBut I\u2019ve told Lanc\u00f4me that I want to be an aging model\u2014so they have to keep me for at least five more years until I\u2019m over 50.\u201d<\/p>\n
Roberts\u2019 comments come on the heels of Ren\u00e9e Zellweger\u2019s recent public appearance, which left the world speculating about just which cosmetic procedures she\u2019s had to make her look so different. Zellweger acknowledged the buzz, saying, \u201cI\u2019m living a different, happy, more fulfilling life, and I\u2019m thrilled that perhaps it shows.\u201d (Notably, Roberts, who turns 47 today, also says that she\u2019s happier as she approaches 50. \u201cThere\u2019s a lightness to my life now\u2014an airy quality of not taking things too seriously,\u201d she says.)<\/p>\n
It\u2019s interesting to note that Roberts and Zellweger are both Oscar winners who\u2019ve stepped out of the spotlight in the past few years\u2014and seem happier because of it. It\u2019s impossible to know whether they\u2019ve chosen to take a break for personal reasons or because Hollywood continues to lack meaty, smart, starring roles for women of their age. But if Roberts is right, looking younger is essential for actresses to land roles, even for bonafide movie stars like her.<\/p>\n
Then again, if an actress does have a little work done, she\u2019s lambasted and mocked. Is there any way for women in Hollywood to thrive as they enter their 40s and beyond? Absolutely\u2014but first, we\u2019ve got to stop judging actresses by their faces alone.<\/p>\n
