The University of Austin at Texas is offering a course titled \u201dBeyonc\u00e9 Feminism, Rihanna Womanism\u201d for its spring 2015 semester.<\/p>\n
According to the university website, students who enroll in the class should expect more than just an endless loop of \u201cCrazy in Love\u201d or \u201cUmbrella.\u201d The course will focus on \u201chow the lyrics, music videos, and actions of these women express various aspects of black feminism such as violence, economic opportunity, sexuality, standards of beauty, and creative self-expression.\u201d<\/p>\n
As associate professor Natasha Tinsely, who works in the Department of African and African Diaspora Studies at the University of Austin at Texas, sums it up: she hopes that the course will shed light on the role black feminism plays in popular culture as well as everyday life.<\/p>\n
In the wake of the current culture\u2019s fixation on \u201cgirl power\u201d \u2013 with Sheryl Sandberg\u2019s Lean In, Sophia Amorouso\u2019s #GirlBoss crusade, and celebrities like Lena Dunham at the forefront of the movement \u2013 it\u2019s no surprise that celebrity figures are being used as models to examine the movement.<\/p>\n
According to Kevin Allred, the professor of \u201cFeminist Perspectives: Politicizing Beyonc\u00e9\u201d at Rutgers University, featuring celebrities in course material, like Beyonc\u00e9 and Rihanna in this case, is a strategic way to draw students in.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a way to speak to the students in something they\u2019re already familiar with,\u201d Allred tells Yahoo Style. \u201cSo if professors use pop-culture figures, it makes it easier for students to engage with the material. And it may get them interested in the course while hopefully introducing them to a whole group of writers, history or something they weren\u2019t already aware of.\u201d<\/p>\n
