{"id":58649,"date":"2014-10-22T16:06:05","date_gmt":"2014-10-22T16:06:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=58649"},"modified":"2014-10-22T16:06:05","modified_gmt":"2014-10-22T16:06:05","slug":"govt-usurping-powers-of-npra-gma","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=58649","title":{"rendered":"Gov\u2019t usurping powers of NPRA &#8211; GMA\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Ghana Medical Association has accused government of attempting to usurp the powers of the National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA) by regulating the management of the tier-two pension contributions of public workers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">About twelve (12) <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2014\/10\/21\/labour-confirms-strike-on-wednesday\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>labour groups are currently on a nationwide strike<\/strong><\/a><\/span> to force government to pay their tier-two pension into a privately managed account by the unions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But government has described the decision as <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2014\/10\/21\/labours-intended-strike-unlawful-govt\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cunlawful\u201d and \u201cunnecessary\u201d<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0claiming that over Ghc440 million is with the Bank of Ghana and\u00a0is yet to be disbursed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;UqYQqqavrp6PzzVqxvGjyVaZA6bQyBfa&#8221;]Speaking on the <strong>Citi Breakfast Show<\/strong>, the Deputy General Secretary of the GMA, Justice Duffo Yankson said the NPRA had the capacity to regulate activities of the fund \u00a0and opposed claims made by the Employment and Labour Relations Minister.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to the Minister of Labour and Employment, Haruna Iddrisu \u201cthe President has a duty and responsibility to protect the fund against any risks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Justice Duffo Yankson argued that the NPRA is the body mandated to have oversight responsibility when it comes to pension.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThey are the regulators, each scheme, fund manager, custodian, administrator, is supposed to give periodic reports to them. They have the capacity to ensure that the listed investments portfolios are followed. Anybody who errs will be sanctioned so the oversight responsibility has already been given to the NPRA.
