{"id":57359,"date":"2014-10-17T12:36:39","date_gmt":"2014-10-17T12:36:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=57359"},"modified":"2014-10-17T12:36:39","modified_gmt":"2014-10-17T12:36:39","slug":"ebola-ghana-named-in-who-priority-list","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=57359","title":{"rendered":"Ebola: Ghana named in WHO priority list"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The World Health Organization has named Ghana among 15 countries it will focus its attention on, to prevent the spread of the deadly Ebola disease.<\/p>\n<p>This was after the European Union (EU) announced a review of its entry policies, and the disease was reported in the last untouched area of Sierra Leone.<\/p>\n<p>The rest of the countries on the WHO&#8217;s list are Ivory Coast, Guinea\u00a0Bissau, Mali, Senegal, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, CAR, DR Congo, Gambia,Mauritania, Nigeria, South Sudan and Togo.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, the WHO\u2019s Global Director, Dr. Isabelle Nuttall said, \u201cthe objective is to stop the transmission from occurring in these countries. They may not have a case but after one case we don\u2019t want more, these countries need to be better prepared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;vhQMuJ820IVeGds873QFKnYYh6wxZ1nD&#8221;]She added that, \u201cthis week we will cross 9,000 cases of Ebola and 4,500 deaths. The outbreak continues to hit health workers hard. So far 427 health care workers have been infected with Ebola\u00a0and 236 have died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile Senegal and Nigeria are expected to be declared Ebola-free within a few days, despite having had the disease there.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the affected countries have been struggling to contain the virus, but these two countries [Nigeria and Senegal] have done so successfully.<\/p>\n<p>The EU also announced that it was reviewing its screening controls for airline passengers leaving West Africa.<\/p>\n<p>After an emergency meeting of EU health ministers,\u00a0EU health chief Tonio Borg said the WHO and\u00a0the EU would look into \u201cconflicting reports\u201d about whether the screening in\u00a0Liberia, Sierra Leone or Guinea was good enough.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>A research conducted by the Northeastern University, USA, earlier said\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2014\/10\/14\/ebola-likely-to-enter-ghana-by-october-31-research\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong>Ghana tops the list of countries at risk of recording an Ebola<\/strong><\/span><\/a> outbreak by October 31.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u00a0It said countries with the largest probability of seeing the arrival of \u00a0the Ebola Viral Disease (EVD) cases before the end of October 2014, are Ghana, United States, France, Senegal and Cote d\u2019Ivoire.<\/p>\n<p>The report was compiled before Senegal, Nigeria and the United States of America (USA) recorded any case and was published on October 6, 2014.<\/p>\n<p>A similar report by the\u00a0Oxford University in United Kingdom also predicted that Ghana and the 14 other countries in Africa are at risk of <a href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2014\/09\/11\/ghana-14-others-at-risk-of-ebola-exposure-oxford-study\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong>animal-to-human transmission of Ebola<\/strong><\/span><\/a> by virtue of their geography.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">&#8211;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>By: Nana Boakye-Yiadom\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The World Health Organization has named Ghana among 15 countries it will focus its attention on, to prevent the spread of the deadly Ebola disease.
