{"id":57077,"date":"2014-10-16T16:16:52","date_gmt":"2014-10-16T16:16:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=57077"},"modified":"2014-10-16T16:23:28","modified_gmt":"2014-10-16T16:23:28","slug":"uk-school-stops-ghanaian-teachers-visit-over-ebola","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=57077","title":{"rendered":"UK school stops Ghanaian teacher&#8217;s visit over Ebola"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"story_continues_1\">A school in County Durham, in the UK, has postponed a planned visit from a teacher from Ghana, after parents voiced concerns about the Ebola virus, despite the country not having any cases.<\/p>\n<p>The teacher was due to visit Howden-le-Wear Primary School, near Crook, next Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The school&#8217;s head teacher said it had listened to &#8220;concerns raised by all sections of the school and community&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;sYhAv7GM802D4hi3jNmK6z6rH8es3x2H&#8221;]Despite being advised the visit was safe, the school chose to postpone it.<\/p>\n<p>The trip was part of the British Council&#8217;s Connecting Classrooms programme, which fosters links between schools across the world.<\/p>\n<p>The current outbreak of Ebola has mainly hit Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, with a small number of cases recorded in Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>Although Ghana is in the same region of West Africa, it does not border on any of those countries.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8216;Balanced concerns&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The school said it sought advice from Public Health England, the Health Protection Agency, Durham County Council and the British Council over whether the visit posed a risk.<\/p>\n<p>It was advised there was no danger, but following a meeting earlier with the school&#8217;s governing body and the British Council, it decided to postpone it.<\/p>\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Map of Ghana\" src=\"http:\/\/news.bbcimg.co.uk\/media\/images\/78246000\/gif\/_78246561_ghana.gif\" width=\"464\" height=\"261\" \/><\/div>\n<div>Ghana does not border any of the countries so far affected by the Ebola outbreak<\/div>\n<p>Parents gave a mixed reaction, with one saying &#8220;quite a few&#8221; people were worried about the teacher coming.<\/p>\n<p>Another said: &#8220;I wasn&#8217;t concerned about it, because Ghana hasn&#8217;t been affected.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The school&#8217;s head teacher, Christopher Baines, said: &#8220;The British Council Connecting Classroom visits have always been an exciting, positive and enriching experience.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To ensure that this remains the case the governing body has taken the decision this afternoon to postpone the visit until a later date.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have listened carefully to concerns raised by all sections of the school and community and have balanced these with the expert advice we have been given.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>Credit: BBC<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A school in County Durham, in the UK, has postponed a planned visit from a teacher from Ghana, after parents voiced concerns about the Ebola virus, despite the country not having any cases.
