{"id":52003,"date":"2014-09-29T13:11:28","date_gmt":"2014-09-29T13:11:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=52003"},"modified":"2014-09-29T13:41:34","modified_gmt":"2014-09-29T13:41:34","slug":"teachers-to-be-paid-per-attendance-alex-kyeremeh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=52003","title":{"rendered":"Teachers to be paid per attendance \u2013 Alex Kyeremeh"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Deputy Minister of Education, Mr Alex Kyeremeh has disclosed that the Ministry has implemented a system where public school teachers will be paid according to the number of days they show up to teach.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, the move is geared towards reducing the rate of teacher absenteeism in the various schools within the country.<\/p>\n<p>A World Bank and United Nations International Children\u2019s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) report, indicate that Ghana ranked first in teacher absenteeism in West Africa.<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;sLpRslvHMyw4Nn8Ue9fppGuwv3yeXUyR&#8221;]According to the report, teacher malingering is the major contributory factor to the low performance of pupils and students in public basic schools in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Kyeremeh said the ministry is working closely with the various Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in order to make the initiative a success.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We will pay them according to the number of days they attend school, so we&#8217;ve been able to do that based on the report we&#8217;ve received from the regions,&#8221; he indicated<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Commenting\u00a0on the World Bank\/UNICEF report, on\u00a0the\u00a0<b>Citi Breakfast Show<\/b>\u00a0on Monday, Mr Alex Kyeremeh said\u00a0the\u00a0Minister of Education, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang\u00a0had initiated a programmed dubbed &#8216;<span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2014\/03\/03\/minister-commissions-committee-to-tackle-teacher-absenteeism\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #666699;\">zero tolerance to teacher absenteeism<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/span>&#8216; which begun last year, to clamp down on such recalcitrant teachers.<\/p>\n<p>He said &#8220;I know some teachers have been relieved of their positions, some teachers have also forfeited their salaries for the number of days they\u2019ve absented themselves from school.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Although he insisted that \u00a0the situation \u201carguably is a global attitude,\u201d\u00a0he explained that\u00a0 \u201csome [teachers] will not like to go to school because&#8230;they have additional jobs to do. If you come to bigger towns, some teachers are traders, some are farmers; they have different business attached to the teaching profession.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cAnother factor is that if teachers are not coming and they are not sanctioned, it\u2019s a complete disincentive to teachers who are also ready to go to school every day,\u201d the deputy minister intimated.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile,\u00a0 Deputy General\u00a0 Secretary of\u00a0 the\u00a0 Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) in charge of\u00a0 Education and Professional development, Thomas Baafi, on the same programme said although the report\u2019s content is regrettable the teachers cannot be entirely blamed.<\/p>\n<p>He explained that \u201cwhen we talk about absenteeism nobody deliberately want to absent himself&#8230; it&#8217;s the\u00a0situation that warrants that. It&#8217;s not the making of the teacher, but it\u2019s not a positive thing.
