{"id":51487,"date":"2014-09-27T08:31:17","date_gmt":"2014-09-27T08:31:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=51487"},"modified":"2014-09-27T08:31:17","modified_gmt":"2014-09-27T08:31:17","slug":"hosni-mubarak-verdict-due-in-protester-killing-trial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=51487","title":{"rendered":"Hosni Mubarak: Verdict due in protester killing trial"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"story_continues_1\">An Egyptian court is due to return a verdict in the retrial of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on charges of corruption and killing protesters during the 2011 uprising.<\/p>\n<p>Mubarak, 86, is on trial alongside his sons and a former interior minister.<\/p>\n<p>He was initially found guilty of the charges in 2012 and sentenced to life in prison, but a court later overturned the conviction on technical grounds.<\/p>\n<p>Mubarak ruled Egypt for almost 30 years before being ousted in the uprising.<\/p>\n<p>He stood down after weeks of unrest ended in the deaths of hundreds of protesters across the country.<\/p>\n<p>The current retrial began in April 2013, and has been adjourned several times since.<\/p>\n<p>Changing evidence<\/p>\n<p>In August, Mubarak was allowed to give a court-room speech broadcast on Egyptian television.<\/p>\n<p>In the speech, he defended his human rights record and said he did his best to fulfil his duties as president.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I spent my whole life defending Egypt and its sons. I say before God, you and the people that I have spent my life fighting the enemies of the country,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Commentators say that Mubarak could be acquitted after several witnesses changed their evidence in his favour.<\/p>\n<p>Mubarak is already serving a three-year prison sentence for embezzlement of public funds.<\/p>\n<p>In August, a court ordered Mubarak&#8217;s release from prison and transfer to a military hospital in Cairo, where he is being held.<\/p>\n<p>He was found guilty in 2012 of the charge relating to killing protesters along with former Interior Minister Habib al-Adly, and sentenced to life in prison.<\/p>\n<p>But in January 2013 the Court of Cassation upheld an appeal by the two men against their convictions on technical grounds and ordered a retrial.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/mubarak.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-51488 aligncenter\" alt=\"mubarak\" src=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/mubarak.jpg\" width=\"624\" height=\"351\" srcset=\"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/mubarak.jpg 624w, https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/mubarak-300x168.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 624px) 100vw, 624px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div>Mubarak is currently being held under house arrest at the Maadi Military Hospital<\/div>\n<p>His sons Alaa and Gamal are currently serving four-year prison terms for embezzlement of state funds.<\/p>\n<p>Together with their father they were also fined $3m (\u00a31.8m) and ordered to repay the $17.6m they were accused of stealing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>Source: BBC<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An Egyptian court is due to return a verdict in the retrial of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on charges of corruption and killing protesters during the 2011 uprising.
