{"id":47950,"date":"2014-09-15T19:59:11","date_gmt":"2014-09-15T19:59:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=47950"},"modified":"2014-09-16T08:07:03","modified_gmt":"2014-09-16T08:07:03","slug":"ghana-could-return-to-hipc-regime-if-minority-leader","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=47950","title":{"rendered":"Ghana could return to HIPC regime if \u2026 &#8211; Minority Leader"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Minority Leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu has said Ghana could return to the Highly Indebted Poor Country(HIPC) regime if government continues to secure more loans from foreign institutions.<\/p>\n<p>The Bank of Ghana (BoG) indicated that the country\u2019s debt as of August 2014 stood at almost GHC 44 billion.<\/p>\n<p>This is about a half of the country\u2019s value of GHC 85 billion.<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;TIdSyrEgEKXUGB2H7urrIxLuLjxUgQwh&#8221;]Ghana issued a $1 billion Eurobond on Thursday while the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) in its latest syndicated loan accepted $1.7 billion from some banks to purchase cocoa beans for the 2014\/2015 cocoa season.<\/p>\n<p>The Minister of Finance, Seth Terkper has<strong><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2014\/09\/15\/dont-worry-about-governments-continuous-borrowing-terkper\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #666699;\"> downplayed worries <\/span><\/a><\/span><\/strong>over government\u2019s continuous borrowing.<\/p>\n<p>But speaking on <strong>Eyewitness News<\/strong>, Mr. Mensah Bonsu criticized government\u2019s consistent borrowing, saying \u201cwe all know that the GDP ratio is in the region of 58.5 percent and we all know that if the ratio reaches about 60 percent it may reach levels of un- sustainability, we will not be able to pay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said bilateral donors will also be unwilling to pay huge debts that may accrue from government\u2019s borrowing in the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we are not careful we may be pushing and pulling ourselves towards the regime of HIPC once again.
