The Minister of Education, Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang says she is convinced Ghana has one of the best educational system despite major challenges facing the education sector.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have a fine education system in this country, we have produced the best minds in any discipline that this country will be proud of,\u201d the Minister said.<\/p>\n
The Minister compared the current system with old one saying \u201cthose were the days when no matter where you went to school, you had a fair chance of advancing yourself and of ending up in the best schools possible,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
She further criticized the drop in the quality of teaching and learning\u00a0 in basic schools and urged teachers at the various public schools to work harder to ensure that students excel academically.<\/p>\n
The Minister further described the 2014 West African Certificate Examination (WASSCE) rate as \u201ctoo high.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat is it that we couldn\u2019t do to get let these children get even 6,6,6 all around\u2026I’m sure there was something we could do,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n
Out of the 242,162 candidates who sat for the May\/June 2014 West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), only 7,442, representing 3.07 per cent, failed<\/span><\/strong><\/a> in all the subjects.<\/p>\n She noted that the Education Ministry has in that regard asked the West African Examination Council (WAEC) to give it the detailed breakdown of the figures representing the actual percentage of students who actually failed.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n By: Marian Efe Ansah\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana
