The Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA)\u00a0 has directed its members to boycott the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA\u2019s) massive cleanup exercise on Thursday.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

The Vice President earlier directed\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/a>the AMA and sanitation agencies to clear all refuse at unapproved dump sites in the metropolis within 10 days.<\/p>\n

The AMA therefore resolved to organize a clean-up exercise on Thursday to clear the mountains of rubbish in the major markets in the metropolis in fulfillment of the directive given by the Vice President.<\/p>\n

The exercise is also aimed at ridding the city of the filth that has engulfed it, as well as curbing the spread of cholera.<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

GUTA has however directed its members to boycott the clean-up exercise because the Assembly failed to consult it before announcing the exerise.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Citi News<\/strong>, the President of GUTA, Mr. George Ofori said that though the AMA has been collecting\u00a0 tolls from traders, it has failed to use the funds for its intended purpose.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf they think that the shop owners or the business community should do that[clean up]on their behalf then they don\u2019t have any business coming to collect any business operating permit fees from traders,\u201d Mr. Ofori added.<\/p>\n
