{"id":4115,"date":"2014-03-05T14:42:26","date_gmt":"2014-03-05T14:42:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=4115"},"modified":"2014-03-05T20:08:06","modified_gmt":"2014-03-05T20:08:06","slug":"provide-mps-with-local-language-facilities-rasheed-dramani","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=4115","title":{"rendered":"Provide MPs with interpreters \u2013 Rasheed Dramani"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/parl-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-4116\" alt=\"parl (2)\" src=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/parl-2-300x199.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/parl-2-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/parl-2.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The Director of the Parliamentary Center in Africa, Dr. Rasheed Dramani is asking Ghana\u2019s Parliament to provide Parliamentarians with interpreters to enable MPs communicate in local languages of their choice.<\/p>\n<p>Reports from the House indicate that some MPs \u00a0struggle to effectively communicate in the English language.<\/p>\n<p>MP for Wa East, Ameen Salifu\u2019s embarrassing moment on the floor on Tuesday has sparked debate about the quality of the MPs in the House.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Salifu whose parliamentary profile shows he has two masters degrees on Tuesday struggled to make a coherent comment on the president&#8217;s State of the Nation&#8217;s address.<\/p>\n<p>During a debate on the president\u2019s address, \u00a0Mr. Ameen Salifu said: \u201cMr. Speaker, I want to congratulate the president for his wonderful delivery of his station of nation address &#8230; In fact, development nation is worth emulating&#8230; Mr. Speaker, when President Mahama came, every district was virtually under school trees&#8230; But he has it accessibility, affordability and now infrastructure{sic}.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Some have said MPs should be allowed to communicate in local languages of their choice. Currently Parliament does not have interpreters and all MPs communicate in English language.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on the <strong>Citi Breakfast Show,<\/strong> Dr. Dramani suggested MPs with special challenges should communicate in their local languages and \u00a0Parliament should hire translators for them.<\/p>\n<p>He mentioned that Parliamentarians in Swaziland are allowed to speak their local language if they are unable to express themselves in English.<\/p>\n<p>He however indicated that Ghana\u2019s Parliament currently does not have the facilities to support discussions, debates and submission in the local languages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs it is right now, I think we can safely say we don\u2019t have the facilities or the structures to support this,\u201d Dr. Dramani noted.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>By: Efua Idan Osam\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Director of the Parliamentary Center in Africa, Dr. Rasheed Dramani is asking Ghana\u2019s Parliament to provide Parliamentarians with interpreters to enable MPs communicate in local languages of their choice.
