Acknowledging the fiasco in 2017, Beatty said: \u201cIt\u2019s so nice seeing you again\u201d; Dunaway added: \u201cPresenting is lovelier second time around.\u201d On receiving the award, del Toro, said: \u201cI want to dedicate this to the young film-makers; the youth who are showing [us] how things are done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The cold war-set fantasy thriller stars Sally Hawkins as a mute cleaning woman who discovers a bizarre aquatic-human hybrid in a tank at a secret government lab, and helps it escape. Directed by\u00a0Guillermo del Toro, it led to the Mexican film-maker\u2019s first nomination for best picture \u2013 though Del Toro was also nominated in 2007 for best original screenplay and best foreign language film for Pan\u2019s Labyrinth.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"element element-rich-link element--thumbnail element-rich-link--upgraded\" data-component=\"rich-link\" data-link-name=\"rich-link-1 | 1\">\n<div class=\"rich-link tone-review--item rich-link--pillar-arts\">\n<div class=\"rich-link__container\">\n<div class=\"rich-link__header\">\n<div class=\"stars fc-item__stars\" role=\"presentation\">Having led the nominations list with 13,\u00a0The Shape of Water\u00a0had been considered a strong candidate for the best picture Oscar, and it also won best film at the Critics\u2019 Choice awards and the Producers Guild awards. However, it had lost out to Three Billboards at both the Golden Globes and the Baftas.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>The film\u2019s success has come in spite of it being the subject of a plagiarism controversy in recent weeks. After the nominations were announced,\u00a0the family of late playwright Paul Zindel launched legal action\u00a0over \u201cglaring similarities\u201d between The Shape of Water and Zindel\u2019s 1969 play Let Me Hear You Whisper.
