{"id":40627,"date":"2014-08-20T13:51:31","date_gmt":"2014-08-20T13:51:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=40627"},"modified":"2014-08-20T13:51:31","modified_gmt":"2014-08-20T13:51:31","slug":"japan-landslides-kill-32-in-hiroshima-prefecture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=40627","title":{"rendered":"Japan landslides kill 32 in Hiroshima prefecture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"story_continues_1\">At least 32 people have been killed in landslides that struck Japan&#8217;s Hiroshima prefecture, officials say.<\/p>\n<p>The landslides happened in a residential area near a mountain in the Hiroshima city outskirts.<\/p>\n<p>They were triggered after the equivalent of a month&#8217;s rain fell in the 24 hours up to Wednesday morning, Japan&#8217;s weather agency said.<\/p>\n<p>Images from the scene showed houses buried in mud and rocks, as rescue teams worked their way towards homes.<\/p>\n<p>Another nine people are still missing, said authorities.<\/p>\n<p>Another local government official said some people were swept away and it was &#8220;hard to know exactly how many are unaccounted for&#8221;, AP reported.<\/p>\n<p>The BBC&#8217;s Rupert Wingfield-Hayes says that several of those killed were children.<\/p>\n<p>One of the youngest victims was a two-year-old boy, Kyodo news agency reported.<\/p>\n<p>Among the dead was a 53-year old rescue worker who died when the hillside collapsed again, said authorities. We have a rainy season. But I think everybody was pretty caught off guard by how much rain it was,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said he had asked local officials to &#8220;raise the number of [military] personnel to several hundred in order to strengthen rescue operations&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>More rain could trigger further landslides, weather officials have warned.<\/p>\n<p>Much of central and southern Japan is mountainous, with many homes nestled into steep slopes.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, a typhoon triggered landslides on Izu Oshima island, south of Tokyo, that left 35 people dead.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Source: BBC<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At least 32 people have been killed in landslides that struck Japan&#8217;s Hiroshima prefecture, officials say.
