{"id":405150,"date":"2018-02-28T06:31:46","date_gmt":"2018-02-28T06:31:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=405150"},"modified":"2018-02-28T06:31:46","modified_gmt":"2018-02-28T06:31:46","slug":"famous-egyptian-singer-sentenced-prison-river-nile-joke","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=405150","title":{"rendered":"Famous Egyptian singer sentenced to prison over River Nile joke"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Egyptian singer Sherine Abdel Wahab has been sentenced to six months in prison for joking about the cleanliness of the River Nile.<\/p>\n<p>Sherine, one of the country&#8217;s most famous singers &#8211; and a judge on the Arabic version of The Voice TV show &#8211; told a fan that drinking from the famous river might give them parasites.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Drink Evian instead,&#8221; she joked.<\/p>\n<p>Another singer, Laila Amer, was also sentenced on Tuesday to two years in prison over a music video.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Amer &#8211; who is not as well known as Sherine &#8211; was found guilty of &#8220;inciting debauchery and immorality&#8221;. The director and another actor were sentenced to shorter terms.<\/p>\n<p>Sherine, meanwhile, has been convicted by a Cairo court of spreading false news.
