{"id":395443,"date":"2018-01-26T13:17:27","date_gmt":"2018-01-26T13:17:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=395443"},"modified":"2018-01-26T13:19:07","modified_gmt":"2018-01-26T13:19:07","slug":"bbc-male-presenters-agree-pay-cuts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=395443","title":{"rendered":"Some BBC male presenters agree to pay cuts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Some of the BBC&#8217;s leading male presenters have agreed to take a pay cut after revelations over equal pay.<\/p>\n<p>Jeremy Vine, John Humphrys and Huw Edwards have agreed to reductions, either formally or in principle, the BBC&#8217;s media editor Amol Rajan said.<\/p>\n<p>It follows Carrie Gracie&#8217;s\u00a0resignation from her post as BBC China editor\u00a0in protest at unequal pay between male and female international editors.<\/p>\n<p>5 live presenter Nicky Campbell told listeners he had also taken a cut.<\/p>\n<p>And North America editor Jon Sopel is believed to be in discussions with the corporation.<\/p>\n<p>The corporation said: &#8220;The BBC has agreed pay cuts with a number of leading\u00a0BBC News\u00a0presenters and others have agreed in principle.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/15F63\/production\/_99755998_1a30dcf4-0899-4734-893b-777d709568db.jpg\" alt=\"Carrie Gracie\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/>Carrie Gracie published an open letter giving her reasons for resigning as China editor<\/span><\/figure>\n<p>On his way into work at Radio 2 on Friday, Jeremy Vine was asked by reporters why he had agreed to a lower wage.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8216;No-brainer&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think it needs to be sorted out and I support my female colleagues who have rightly said they should be paid the same when they&#8217;re doing the same job,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s just a no-brainer, so it wasn&#8217;t a problem for me to accept one.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>When asked if it was up to the BBC or individuals to sort out the problem, he added: &#8220;I think the BBC&#8217;s on it and this story is part of it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Asked if he was aware of the problem before Carrie Gracie stepped down as China editor, he said: &#8220;Of course, yeah.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The BBC\u00a0revealed the pay of on-air talent earning over \u00a3150,000\u00a0in July, with two-thirds of stars on the list being men.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body__crosshead\"><strong>BBC taking &#8216;a range of action&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nicky Campbell confirmed on BBC 5 live&#8217;s Breakfast show on Friday that he had taken a pay cut.<\/p>\n<p>Just after the latest news story about male presenters was read out, he added: &#8220;And I am also on that list.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>An independent audit into equal pay at the BBC will be published next week.<\/p>\n<p>The corporation added: &#8220;We&#8217;ve already set out a range of action we&#8217;re taking on fair pay, and we&#8217;ll have more to say on the issue next week.&#8221;<\/p>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><strong>Jeremy Vine<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; the Radio 2, Eggheads and Points of View presenter earned between \u00a3700,000 and \u00a3749,999 in 2016\/17<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><strong>John Humphrys<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; the Today programme and Mastermind host earned between \u00a3600,000 and \u00a3649,999<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><strong>Huw Edwards<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; the\u00a0BBC News\u00a0presenter earned between \u00a3550,000 and \u00a3599,999<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><strong>Nicky Campbell\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; the BBC Radio 5 live and The Big Questions presenter earned between \u00a3400,000-\u00a3449,999<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><strong>Jon Sopel<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; the BBC&#8217;s North America editor earned between \u00a3200,000 and \u00a3249,999<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure class=\"media-portrait no-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef-1.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/CF44\/production\/_99506035_bbc_annual_report_bar_gender624-nc.png\" alt=\"Graphic showing gender pay gap in the pay of BBC stars\" width=\"624\" height=\"666\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><\/span><\/figure>\n<p>Chris Evans topped the list of the best-paid BBC presenters that was published last summer, earning between \u00a32.2m and \u00a32.25m in 2016\/2017.<\/p>\n<p>The highest-paid woman, Claudia Winkleman, earned significantly less &#8211; between \u00a3450,000 and \u00a3500,000.<\/p>\n<p>After leaving her post as China editor, Gracie is now returning to the\u00a0BBC newsroom in London, saying she expects to be &#8220;paid equally&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Amol Rajan said while competition in the entertainment industry had intensified, the opposite has happened in news.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body__crosshead\"><strong>Gender pay gap<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Many of those now taking pay cuts secured generous deals years ago,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That world has disappeared &#8211; and these presenters now accept that a chunk of their salaries will have to disappear with it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Gracie is due to appear before a select committee of MPs next week, shortly before the director general of the BBC, Tony Hall, his deputy, Anne Bulford and the director of news and current affairs, Fran Unsworth.<\/p>\n<p>They were called to discuss what action the corporation is taking to address the gender pay gap.<\/p>\n<p>There have been three investigations into gender pay at the BBC:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">A report was published in October, in line with a requirement on all large organisations. It\u00a0found the gender pay gap at the BBC was 9.3%, against a national average of 18.1%<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">A judge-led audit of equal pay among rank-and-file staff published at the same time found there was &#8220;no question of any systemic gender discrimination&#8221;<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">A review into the BBC&#8217;s approach to the pay of on-air presenters, editors and correspondents is due to be published next week<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Lord Hall pledged to close the gap by 2020, saying the corporation should be &#8220;an exemplar of what can be achieved when it comes to pay, fairness, gender and representation&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>Source: BBC<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Some of the BBC&#8217;s leading male presenters have agreed to take a pay cut after revelations over equal pay.
