{"id":392339,"date":"2018-01-17T08:06:11","date_gmt":"2018-01-17T08:06:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=392339"},"modified":"2018-01-17T08:06:11","modified_gmt":"2018-01-17T08:06:11","slug":"joshua-wong-receives-second-jail-term-2014-protests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=392339","title":{"rendered":"Joshua Wong receives second jail term over 2014 protests"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">A Hong Kong court has jailed activist Joshua Wong for three months, his second prison sentence related to the 2014 pro-democracy protests.<\/p>\n<p>Along with other activists he was found guilty of contempt of court for blocking clearance of a protest site.<\/p>\n<p>He had been on bail pending an appeal against another six-month term in a separate case linked to the protests.<\/p>\n<p>Wong was the public face of the protests against the perceived increase of authoritarian influence from China.<\/p>\n<p>Known as Umbrella Movement,\u00a0the 2014 protests brought parts of central Hong Kong to a standstill for nearly three months.<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of the hearing, the 21-year old said he had &#8220;no regrets&#8221; about his part in the demonstrations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They can lock up our bodies but they can&#8217;t lock up our minds,&#8221; he said outside the court.<\/p>\n<p>Wong had pleaded guilty, deciding not to fight the charges.<\/p>\n<p>The court denied bail but granted a second hearing with Wong&#8217;s lawyers for later on Wednesday on the matter.<\/p>\n<p>Fellow activist Raphael Wong was sentenced to four months and 15 days. Several other activists received suspended sentences.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef-1.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/2D70\/production\/_91523611_2a8a84bd-2bae-45d5-be30-bd06edb0016e.jpg\" alt=\"Hong Kong protests (Sept 2014)\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In August 2017,\u00a0Joshua Wong was jailed for six months for unlawful assembly.<\/p>\n<p>He had initially been sentenced to community service but the Hong Kong government appealed against that, arguing it was too lenient.<\/p>\n<p>His new conviction on Wednesday comes just one day after his lawyers had appealed against that separate six-month sentence.<\/p>\n<p>The courts will decide on the appeal for the separate charges at a later date.<\/p>\n<p>The student activist was at the heart of the mass demonstrations\u00a0calling for more democracy and protesting against Beijing&#8217;s growing influence.<\/p>\n<p>The protesters were calling for free elections for Hong Kong&#8217;s leadership but failed to achieve their goal. Several of their leaders, including Joshua Wong have since entered politics.<\/p>\n<p>Hong Kong was handed over from British rule to China in 1997 with Beijing agreeing to govern the territory under the principle of &#8220;one country, two systems&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Under this Basic Law, Hong Kong would enjoy &#8220;a high degree of autonomy, except in foreign and defence affairs&#8221; for the next 50 years.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>Source: BBC<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Hong Kong court has jailed activist Joshua Wong for three months, his second prison sentence related to the 2014 pro-democracy protests.
