{"id":387521,"date":"2017-12-31T13:52:01","date_gmt":"2017-12-31T13:52:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=387521"},"modified":"2017-12-31T13:52:01","modified_gmt":"2017-12-31T13:52:01","slug":"dozens-killed-bus-lorry-road-crash-kenya","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=387521","title":{"rendered":"Dozens killed in bus and lorry road crash in Kenya"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">At least 36 people have died in a head-on collision between a lorry and a Nairobi-bound bus on a notoriously dangerous road near Migaa in Kenya.<\/p>\n<p>Local officials said the accident happened at 03:00 (0:00 GMT), and the bus was speeding and in the wrong lane.<\/p>\n<p>The World Health Organisation (WHO) has ranked Kenya as one of the world&#8217;s worst countries for road safety.<\/p>\n<p>Police believe over 100 people have died in the same area on the Nakuru-Eldoret highway in recent weeks.<\/p>\n<p>The bus was reportedly carrying 46 passengers to Nairobi from the western town of Busia when the accident happened.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was asleep when the accident occurred and all I heard was a loud bang and screams from all over before I was helped out,&#8221;\u00a0a passenger who survived the crash told a local radio station.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/CCB2\/production\/_99420425_bus1.jpg\" alt=\"The bus, turned on the right side, is shown heavily damaged and crushed\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><\/span><\/figure>\n<p>Both vehicles&#8217; drivers are said to be among the dead, with the youngest victim reportedly a three-year-old child.<\/p>\n<p>The Kenyan Red Cross said on Twitter that 18 passengers from the bus were taken to hospital with serious injuries.<\/p>\n<p>Six of the injured later died, officials say.<\/p>\n<p>Police say the accident on Sunday is the worst on the highway in the month of December.<\/p>\n<p>The National Transport and Safety Authority announced an immediate ban on overnight travel for long-distance buses following Sunday&#8217;s crash.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month\u00a0Kenyan officials announced the road was going to be renovated into a dual carriageway in 2018, in order to try and minimise accidents on the deadly stretch.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>Source: BBC<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At least 36 people have died in a head-on collision between a lorry and a Nairobi-bound bus on a notoriously dangerous road near Migaa in Kenya.
