{"id":385684,"date":"2017-12-23T10:03:13","date_gmt":"2017-12-23T10:03:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=385684"},"modified":"2017-12-23T18:20:45","modified_gmt":"2017-12-23T18:20:45","slug":"trump-praises-latest-north-korea-sanctions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=385684","title":{"rendered":"Trump praises latest North Korea sanctions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">US President Donald Trump has praised the UN Security Council for imposing tough new sanctions on North Korea in response to ballistic missile tests.<\/p>\n<p>In a tweet,\u00a0Mr Trump said the vote proved the world &#8220;wants peace, not death&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The US-drafted resolution includes measures to slash North Korea&#8217;s petrol imports by up to 90%.<\/p>\n<p>China and Russia, Pyongyang&#8217;s main trading partners, voted in favour of the resolution.<\/p>\n<p>North Korea is already subject to a raft of sanctions from the US, the UN and the EU.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The United Nations Security Council just voted 15-0 in favor of additional Sanctions on North Korea. The World wants Peace, not Death!&#8221; Mr Trump tweeted.<\/p>\n<p>The US ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, said the sanctions sent an &#8220;unambiguous message to Pyongyang that further defiance will invite further punishments and isolation&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>She described North Korea as &#8220;the most tragic example of evil in the modern world&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said the latest measures against North Korea were a &#8220;vital step&#8221; towards curbing its nuclear weapons programme.<\/p>\n<p>He said the international community had shown it was united in its condemnation of the North&#8217;s &#8220;reckless behaviour&#8221;.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-with-caption\">\n<div class=\"player-with-placeholder\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"media-placeholder player-with-placeholder__image narrative-video-placeholder\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/images\/ic\/720x405\/p05rvw0s.jpg\" \/><\/div><figcaption class=\"media-with-caption__caption\"><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Chinese foreign ministry described the situation on the peninsula as &#8220;complex and sensitive&#8221; and called on all sides to &#8220;exercise restraint and make active efforts to ease tensions&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body__crosshead\"><strong>What exactly are the new sanctions?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The US said it was seeking a diplomatic solution to the issue and drafted this new set of sanctions:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">Deliveries of petrol products will be capped at 500,000 barrels a year, and crude oil at four million barrels a year<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">All North Korean nationals working abroad will have to return home within 24 months under the proposals, restricting a vital source of foreign currency<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">There will also be a ban on exports of North Korean goods, such as machinery and electrical equipment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Tensions have risen this year over North Korea&#8217;s nuclear and missile programmes, which it has pursued despite pressure from world powers.<\/p>\n<div class=\"social-embed\"><\/div>\n<p>The UN sanctions came in response to\u00a0Pyongyang&#8217;s 28 November firing of a ballistic missile, which the US said was its highest yet.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Trump has previously threatened to &#8220;totally destroy&#8221; North Korea if it launches a nuclear attack. North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has described the US president as &#8220;mentally deranged&#8221;.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-with-caption\">\n<div class=\"player-with-placeholder\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"media-placeholder player-with-placeholder__image narrative-video-placeholder\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/images\/ic\/720x405\/p05pnkwq.jpg\" \/><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"story-body__crosshead\"><strong>What about previous sanctions?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Last month, the US unveiled fresh sanctions against North Korea\u00a0which it said were designed to limit the funding for its nuclear and ballistic missile programmes.<\/p>\n<p>The measures targeted North Korean shipping operations and Chinese companies that trade with Pyongyang.<\/p>\n<p>The UN also approved new sanctions following North Korea&#8217;s nuclear test on 3 September.<\/p>\n<p>These measures restricted oil imports and banned textile exports &#8211; an attempt to starve the North of fuel and income for its weapons programmes.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape no-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/9204\/production\/_99008373_n_korea_missile_height_on_globe_v4_640-nc.png\" alt=\"Graphic: North Korea's high altitude tests\" width=\"640\" height=\"482\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><\/span><\/figure>\n<p class=\"story-body__crosshead\"><strong>What effect have previous sanctions had?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The US has been imposing sanctions on North Korea for more than a decade with little success.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, North Korea has said fresh sanctions will only make it accelerate its nuclear programme. It has continued to test nuclear and ballistic missiles despite these recent examples of UN pressure:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><strong>30 November 2016:<\/strong>\u00a0UN targeted North Korea&#8217;s valuable coal trade with China, slashing exports by about 60% under a new sales cap.
