{"id":384475,"date":"2017-12-19T08:19:35","date_gmt":"2017-12-19T08:19:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=384475"},"modified":"2017-12-19T08:19:35","modified_gmt":"2017-12-19T08:19:35","slug":"facebook-post-feel-better","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=384475","title":{"rendered":"Facebook: Post more to feel better about yourself"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"story-body\">\n<div class=\"story-body__inner\">\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Facebook\u00a0has defended itself against claims that using the site can damage wellbeing and mental health.<\/p>\n<p>In a blogpost, it said while there was evidence it could negatively affect mood, the way it affected people was determined by how they used it.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook&#8217;s downsides could be combated by making more use of the site and interacting positively, it said.<\/p>\n<p>A social media expert said the way\u00a0Facebook\u00a0was built made it hard to use it in those better ways.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Active use<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Questions about the impact of\u00a0Facebook\u00a0came into focus last week, following comments from Sean Parker,\u00a0Facebook&#8217;s first president, and\u00a0Chamath Palihapitiya, a former executive at the company.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Parker said the site set up &#8220;feedback loops&#8221; that helped to ensure people kept coming back.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Palihapitiya said the social network was &#8220;ripping society apart&#8221; and\u00a0exploited human psychology\u00a0to maintain its hold on its users.<\/p>\n<p>In response,\u00a0Facebook\u00a0said it had changed a lot in the six years since Mr Palihapitiya left and was no longer interested in just expanding its user base.<\/p>\n<p>In the more recent blog,\u00a0Facebook&#8217;s director of research, David Ginsberg, said there was a continuing internal debate at the company about whether time spent on social media was good for people.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Ginsberg said there had been &#8220;compelling research&#8221; that linked a rise in depression among teenagers to rising consumption of social media and that looked at the way technology had changed relationships.<\/p>\n<p>But set against these disadvantages were benefits that showed social-media use could improve peoples&#8217; moods and help maintain the social ties that directly influenced wellbeing and resilience.<\/p>\n<p>What made the difference, he said, was how people used\u00a0Facebook.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Just like in person, interacting with people you care about can be beneficial, while simply watching others from the sidelines may make you feel worse,&#8221; wrote Mr Ginsberg.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef-1.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/AF2D\/production\/_99254844_043419655-1.jpg\" alt=\"Facebook logo\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><\/span><\/figure>\n<p>Being more active on\u00a0Facebook\u00a0and proactively engaging with people was better than just passively consuming updates and posts, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook\u00a0was now engineering the site to help people be active participants instead of just spectators, Mr Ginsberg said.<\/p>\n<p>It had also created tools, such as the Take A Break feature, which let people manage how they interacted with former partners, to help limit emotional fallout.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Bernie Hogan, a senior research fellow at the Oxford Internet Institute who has written extensively about\u00a0Facebook, was sceptical about how easy it would be for people to use the site for &#8220;positive interaction&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What the researchers are valiantly trying to do is set out what they believe is a good way to use\u00a0Facebook,&#8221; he said. &#8220;What they are not talking about is how that course is not what\u00a0Facebook\u00a0is being designed for.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They are saying that the solution is more interactivity, more personal feedback and less broadcasting,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The problem is that they are engineering tools for more broadcasting.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"topic-tags\">\n<div id=\"u11743956711143255\">\n<div class=\"tags-container\">\n<h2 class=\"tags-title story-body__crosshead\">&#8211;<\/h2>\n<p>Source: BBC<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Facebook\u00a0has defended itself against claims that using the site can damage wellbeing and mental health.
