{"id":384199,"date":"2017-12-18T06:00:01","date_gmt":"2017-12-18T06:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=384199"},"modified":"2017-12-18T05:32:29","modified_gmt":"2017-12-18T05:32:29","slug":"atlanta-hartsfield-jackson-airport-power-cut-strands-thousands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=384199","title":{"rendered":"Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson airport power cut strands thousands"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A power cut at Atlanta&#8217;s Hartsfield-Jackson international airport has led to a partial shut-down, with tens of thousands of people reported affected.<\/p>\n<p>The airport is the world&#8217;s busiest, handling more than 250,000 passengers and almost 2,500 flights every day.<\/p>\n<p>Passengers were left in darkened terminals or on board aeroplanes.<\/p>\n<p>Power is being restored at the airport, but over 1,000 flights were cancelled with hundreds of more cancellations scheduled for Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Many flights scheduled to arrive from other airports are being diverted elsewhere or held at their departure airport.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, the airport confirmed they had suffered a power outage shortly after 13:00 (18:00 GMT) on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Georgia Power, who supplies the airport&#8217;s electricity, said they believed a fire at an underground electrical facility was to blame for the outage.<\/p>\n<p>Passengers affected by widespread power outage sit in airport terminal and wait for updatesImage copyrightEPA<br \/>\nImage caption<br \/>\nOver 1,000 flights have reportedly been cancelled as much of the airport&#8217;s electricity remains off<br \/>\nThey said the cause of the blaze was not known.<\/p>\n<p>Power was fully restored to the airport by midnight on Sunday (05:00GMT), city officials said.<\/p>\n<p>Atlanta&#8217;s mayor confirmed the fire&#8217;s cause was under investigation, and apologised to the thousands affected.<\/p>\n<p>A number of major airlines, including United, Southwest and American Airlines, completely suspended their operations for the rest of Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Images shared on social media showed passengers waiting in darkness.
