{"id":381439,"date":"2017-12-09T09:05:37","date_gmt":"2017-12-09T09:05:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=381439"},"modified":"2017-12-09T09:33:30","modified_gmt":"2017-12-09T09:33:30","slug":"prof-ocquayes-comments-on-jerusalem-his-personal-view-govt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=381439","title":{"rendered":"Prof. Oquaye&#8217;s comments on Jerusalem his personal view &#8211; Gov&#8217;t"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The government has distanced itself from comments made by the Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Mike Oquaye, acknowledging Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, days after the United States had issued similar sentiments.<\/p>\n<p>The US state department has been directed by President Donald Trump to begin moving the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.<\/p>\n<p>The US&#8217; decision is viewed as having hefty consequences because of the standing of Jerusalem to\u00a0Israel and the Palestinians; two counties that have been in conflict for decades.<\/p>\n<p>Israeli sovereignty over Jerusalem has never been recognised as all countries situate their embassies in Tel Aviv.<\/p>\n<p>East Jerusalem, was annexed by Israel after the Six Day War of 1967\u00a0and has not been recognised as part of Israel until the US&#8217; decision.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with Israeli media network, i24NEWS\u00a0on Tuesday in relation to these developments, Prof. Oquaye said Ghana would abide with Israel\u2019s wishes on the standing of Jerusalem because \u201cwhatever Israel wants, we in Ghana will go by that, because that is essentially an internal decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Speaker was in Israel as part of the \u201cPower Africa\u201d initiative where he also alluded to the strong \u201chistorical ties between Israel and Ghana.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_380228\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-380228\" style=\"width: 620px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-380228\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Shirley-Ayorkor-Botchway-Minister-of-Foreign-Affairs-620x330.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"330\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-380228\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Shirley Ayorkor Botchway, Foreign Affairs Minister<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But with the knowledge of the volatile nature of Israel-Palestine relations, the\u00a0Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration stated that the comments made by Prof. Ocquaye did not reflect Ghana\u2019s foreign policy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile appreciating the interest taken by Rt. Hon. Mike Ocquaye, the Foreign Ministry wishes to emphasize that it is a personal view to which the Rt. Hn. Speaker is entitled,\u201d a statement from the Ministry said.<\/p>\n<p>The ministry emphasized the government&#8217;s neutral stance on the matter saying that \u201cGhana has always supported the position that the Palestinian-Isreali conflict should be resolved peacefully between the parties themselves and all the stakeholders involved.
