{"id":38030,"date":"2014-08-09T07:21:25","date_gmt":"2014-08-09T07:21:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=38030"},"modified":"2014-08-09T07:21:25","modified_gmt":"2014-08-09T07:21:25","slug":"sewage-swamps-s-sudan-refugees-in-un-camp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=38030","title":{"rendered":"Sewage swamps S Sudan refugees in UN camp"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>South Sudan refugees residing in a UN camp are\u00a0living in knee-deep, sewage-contaminated floodwater, forcing some families to\u00a0sleep standing up so they can hold their children out of the water, an international aid\u00a0group has said.<\/p>\n<p>Doctors Without Borders said on Friday the conditions in the camp in Bentiu are &#8220;an\u00a0affront to human dignity&#8221;, and demanded that dry land within the camp be\u00a0immediately made available for living space.<\/p>\n<p>The residents, most of whom fled fighting between rebels who support opposition leader Riek Machar and government forces since last December,\u00a0cannot leave the\u00a0camp because of fear that they could be killed outside.<\/p>\n<p>The UN is housing nearly 100,000 people in South Sudan in bases that\u00a0were not intended to house internally displaced persons.<\/p>\n<p>Ethnically targeted\u00a0violence broke out last December between supporters of Machar and the military, forcing more than one million people to flee\u00a0their homes.<\/p>\n<p>Human Rights Watch on Friday released a report documenting the killings of\u00a0thousands of civilians since the conflict began in what the group called &#8220;extraordinary acts of cruelty that amount to war crimes&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The group called\u00a0on the UN to impose an arms embargo on South Sudan and place targeted\u00a0sanctions on individuals &#8220;responsible for serious violations of\u00a0international law&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>No end in sight<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Despite international pressure to end the violence, there is no end in\u00a0sight to the conflict. Representatives of the government and rebels met for a\u00a0fifth time in Ethiopia earlier this week for peace talks, but the rebels did\u00a0not show up on the second day of talks, according to the regional bloc IGAD.<\/p>\n<p>South Sudan Information Minister Michael Lueth said in a statement that\u00a0the peace talks were doomed by &#8220;the fact that the opposition has wavered in\u00a0their commitment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>President Salva Kiir, who was in Washington this week as part of the\u00a0US-Africa summit, told reporters while standing alongside US Secretary of\u00a0State John Kerry that Machar is\u00a0not in full control of the opposition fighters.<\/p>\n<p>Kiir said he wants peace\u00a0soon.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I will be happy because the people who are dying on both sides are my\u00a0people,&#8221; Kiir said. &#8220;I am an elected president, and the people who elected\u00a0me were not from my tribe. I was elected by all the people of South Sudan.
