{"id":377688,"date":"2017-11-26T09:19:04","date_gmt":"2017-11-26T09:19:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=377688"},"modified":"2017-11-26T09:19:04","modified_gmt":"2017-11-26T09:19:04","slug":"teen-actress-beats-veterans-chinese-oscars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=377688","title":{"rendered":"Teen actress beats veterans at &#8216;Chinese Oscars&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">A teenage newcomer has beaten established stars to win best supporting actress at the film awards dubbed the Chinese-language Oscars.<\/p>\n<p>Vicky Chen, 14, was nominated at the Golden Horse Film Awards for her role in The Bold, The Corrupt and The Beautiful.<\/p>\n<p>Her co-star, Hong Kong veteran Kara Wai, won the best actress gong, which Chen was also nominated for.<\/p>\n<p>The awards are held annually in Taiwan and are open to Chinese-language films.<\/p>\n<p>The Bold, The Corrupt and The Beautiful, a crime drama centred around a wealthy family, was nominated in seven categories and won in three, including best film.<\/p>\n<p>Chen was also nominated for best actress for her role in Angels Wear White. She plays a hotel maid who witnesses a sexual assault and grapples with the decision of reporting it.<\/p>\n<p>Despite losing to Wai in that prize, she beat two former best actress winners in the best supporting actress category.<\/p>\n<p>Although it missed out on best film, The Great Buddha+, by Taiwanese director Huang Hsin-Yao, was a big winner. It took five awards, including best adapted screenplay, best original film score and best cinematography.<\/p>\n<p>The mostly black-and-white dark comedy focuses on two friends &#8211; Pickle, a night security guard at a factory making Buddha statues, and Belly Button, a collector of recyclables. The pair uncover footage of Pickle&#8217;s wealthy boss that reveals his dark secrets.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef-1.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/3B8B\/production\/_98934251_gettyimages-878997200.jpg\" alt=\"The cast of The Bold, The Corrupt and The Beautiful pose with their awards at the Golden Horse Film Awards\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><\/span><\/figure>\n<p>Ang Lee, the Taiwanese-American director, and US actress Jessica Chastain jointly presented the best actress prize.<\/p>\n<p>Lee was the first Asian to win the best director at the Hollywood Oscars, taking it in 2006 for Brokeback Mountain.
