In his appeal to the Danish Queen, President Akufo-Addo noted Africa\u2019s common stance on UN reform per the 2005 Ezulwini Consensus, and urged Denmark to support its calls for \u201cthis long overdue reform\u201d.<\/p>\n
The\u00a0Ezulwini Consensus\u00a0is a position on international relations and reform of the\u00a0United Nations, agreed by the African Union.<\/p>\n
As part of the Ezulwini Consensus, African Heads of State and Governments have demanded two seats as permanent members and five further seats as non-permanent members on the UN Security Council.<\/p>\n
“It is time to correct the longstanding injustice that the current structure and composition of the UN security council represents for the nations of Africa,\u201d President Akufo-Addo concluded.<\/p>\n
The UN Security Council<\/strong><\/p>\nThe Security Council is composed of 15 Members comprising five permanent members and 10 non-permanent members.<\/p>\n
The permanent members are China,\u00a0France,\u00a0Russia,\u00a0the United Kingdom,\u00a0and\u00a0the United States of America.<\/p>\n
The 10 non-permanent members are elected for two-year terms by the General Assembly, of which Africa currently has three countries;\u00a0Egypt,\u00a0Ethiopia, and Senegal.<\/p>\n
Ghana has served on the Security Council as a non-permanent\u00a0member three times, with the most recent term ending in 2007.<\/p>\n
