President Nana Akufo-Addo on Monday November 13, 207, launched the National Sanitation Campaign not only with a call for a change in attitude from Ghanaians, but some policy initiatives to enforce already existing sanitation laws.<\/p>\n

The president admitted that indiscipline was a major stumbling\u00a0block in Ghana’s attempts to improve sanitation, but stressed that his government intendeds to\u00a0make “a fresh\u00a0start.”<\/p>\n

The New Patriotic Party had pledged to introduce a comprehensive programme to address Ghana\u2019s dire sanitation situation, especially in urban areas.<\/p>\n

The President has made it his mission to make sure Accra is the cleanest city in Africa<\/a><\/strong><\/span> by the time he leaves office.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe health of the people of this country is as much a part of our resource as our cocoa and mineral wealth,\u201d the President said, quoting Ghana’s former Prime Minister Kofi Busia.<\/p>\n

Below are some key points from the National Sanitation Campaign initiative:<\/p>\n

  1. Establishment of the National Sanitation Authority<\/li>\n
  2. Establishment of National Sanitation Fund, which will be \u201cannounced shortly,” according to the President.<\/li>\n
  3. Local government charged to ensure one house, one toilet policy is adhered to.<\/li>\n
  4. Sanitation Ministry and Attorney General’s office to set aside a\u00a0day to try sanitation offenses<\/li>\n
  5. The Evaluation and Monitoring Minister is to publish Metropolitan, Municipal, District Assembly\u2019s sanitation performances quarterly.<\/li>\n
  6. Sanitation Ambassadors will be appointed\u00a0to help with the campaign.<\/li>\n
  7. The development of three new material recovery sites for the recovery and recycling of waste from Accra.<\/li>\n
  8. The government intends to adequately\u00a0resource waste management companies with modern and effective tools for their work.<\/li>\n
  9. All government departments and agencies will be assigned two officers, Sanitation Marshals and Deputy Marshals, to ensure the compliance to sanitation by-laws.<\/li>\n
  10. The establishment of a National Sanitation Brigade,\u00a0made up of Ghanaian youth, to enforce\u00a0sanitation laws nationwide.<\/li>\n
  11. The deployment of automatic sweepers for major streets<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
