President Nana\u00a0Akufo-Addo\u00a0has assured\u00a0that he will not turn a blind eye to what he called “the new phenomenon of vigilantism” in Ghana.<\/p>\n

Addressing a meeting of the National House of Chiefs on Monday, President Akufo-Addo\u00a0vowed not to compromise on such acts of lawlessness perpetrated by\u00a0supposed party followers.<\/p>\n

I will not walk the path of others trod who found it convenient to turn a blind eye to the criminal misdeeds of their followers and took no action, as it would displease them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI am walking another path, the path of making reality the principle of the rule of law, the idea of equality of every citizen before the law. Wrongdoers wear no political colours. They are just wrongdoers, and will be dealt with as such,\u201d the President told the chiefs.<\/p>\n

Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery, has already\u00a0warned that Police Commanders<\/a><\/span>\u00a0<\/strong>who fail to ensure arrests and prosecution in vigilante-related incidents will face sanctions.<\/p>\n

Several groups of Ghanaian youth, believed to be members of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), have gone on the\u00a0rampage in recent months, seizing\u00a0public toilets<\/strong><\/a><\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0toll booths<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, locking up\u00a0state establishments<\/strong><\/a><\/span>\u00a0and attacking some\u00a0state officials<\/strong><\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n

The government\u2019s commitment to security has been questioned following the recent upsurge, but some arrests<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0have been made\u00a0in a few recent instances of political vigilantism.<\/p>\n

Anti-vigilante\u00a0<\/strong>task-force<\/b><\/p>\n

The government, in response to the spate of political\u00a0vigilantism, has set up a task-force<\/a><\/strong><\/span> to investigate\u00a0such occurrences by some aggrieved members of the governing NPP, especially in the northern\u00a0region.<\/p>\n

The task-force is led by a Deputy Minister for Energy, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam Anta, and some of its members include the Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Hassan Tampuli, a Presidential Staffer, Clara Napaga Tia Sulemana, and Managing Director of Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), Dr. Clifford Braimah.<\/p>\n

The Task-Force started work in the Northern Region holding discussions with major stakeholders involving NPP regional executives.<\/p>\n
