The Western regional health service says it has put the region \u201con high alert\u201d for\u00a0 any case of cholera in the region.<\/p>\n
Over 500 cases of cholera have so far been recorded in Accra alone since June, leading to 15 deaths in the capital.<\/p>\n
The Public Health Directorate of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) \u00a0had earlier warned that the outbreak of cholera in the metropolis was gradually reaching an epidemic status.<\/p>\n
However, the Western Regional health director, Dr. Emmanuel Tenkorang, told Citi News<\/b> that even though the region has not recorded any case, all the health facilities have been resourced to tackle cholera, should there be an outbreak.<\/p>\n
Dr. Tenkorang revealed that the hospitals had been told \u00a0to test patients, who come in with cases of\u00a0 diarrhoea and other communicable diseases, for cholera.<\/p>\n
He insisted that the hospitals in the region \u201chave the logistics and the drugs to manage\u201d any cases of cholera that might be recorded.<\/p>\n
Whilst assuring the populace about their preparedness, Dr. Emmanuel Tenkorang bemoaned the poor sanitation conditions in the Sekondi Metropolis.<\/p>\n
According to Dr. Tenkorang, \u201cthe most important right now is to educate the public on the importance of personal hygiene and environmental sanitation.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe need to intensify our environmental sanitation.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s one of our major headaches in the region,\u2026 the sanitation is very poor,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
