{"id":366595,"date":"2017-10-30T07:12:22","date_gmt":"2017-10-30T07:12:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=366595"},"modified":"2017-10-30T07:12:22","modified_gmt":"2017-10-30T07:12:22","slug":"togolese-arrested-for-illegal-protest-to-be-arraigned-today","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=366595","title":{"rendered":"Togolese arrested for illegal protest to be arraigned today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Twenty Six Togolese nationals arrested for attempting to stage an unlawful demonstration in Accra over the political\u00a0crisis in their country\u00a0are expected to be arraigned today [Monday].<\/p>\n<p>The Police <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/10\/28\/26-togolese-arrested-for-illegal-protest-in-accra\/\">arrested the\u00a026<\/a><\/strong><\/span> on Saturday after they converged on the Kawukudi Park in preparation for a mass protest without notifying police, in clear breach of the public order act.<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;oO9zTkS3ItbJt2uybDGUUg9FeFG6DdHr&#8221;]Some motorbikes were also impounded by police\u00a0at the scene.<\/p>\n<p>Togolese in Ghana in recent times, have organized such protests in solidarity with efforts back home by the opposition to have presidential term limits in place.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ghana consulting with Togo<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Foreign Affairs Minister, Shirley Ayorkor Botchway, has said that the government is frantically engaging Togolese authorities over the heightened political situation in that country.<\/p>\n<p>One of the criticisms from some protesters in Togo has been\u00a0directed towards the perceived silence and inaction from the sub-region.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_318380\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-318380\" style=\"width: 960px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-318380\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Shirley-Ayorkor-Botchway.jpg\" alt=\"Shirley Ayorkor Botchway, Minister of Foreign Affairs\" width=\"960\" height=\"640\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-318380\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Shirley Ayorkor Botchway, Minister of Foreign Affairs<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But Speaking to <strong>Citi News<\/strong>, Mrs. Ayorkor Botchway assured that &#8220;consultations are going on. We are talking [with them] because it is important. \u00a0We are a stakeholder. Anything that happens in Togo has an effect on us. Anything that happens in Ghana will have an effect on Togo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;&#8230;it is in our interest to make sure Togo is safe and Ghana is safe, and there is nothing negative going on in any of the two countries\u2026 The other ECOWAS countries are all engaged to ensure that everything is okay in our sister country in terms of their politics and adhering to their constitution,\u201d the Minister said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Togolese crisis<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Togo&#8217;s opposition parties\u00a0have been demanding a return to constitutional term limits for the Presidency, and also for President Faure Gnassingbe to step down.<\/p>\n<p>Gnassingbe has been in power\u00a0since 2005 after the death of his father, General Gnassingbe Eyadema, who ruled Togo for nearly 50 years.<\/p>\n<p>The anti-Gnassingbe protests,\u00a0that have seen hundreds of thousands of people take to the streets across the country, have resulted in over 15 people killed and scores injured.<\/p>\n<p>Three new street marches have been announced for November 7, 8 and 9, despite the Togolese government\u2019s ban on weekday protests.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>By: Duke Mensah Opoku &amp;Delali Adogla-Bessa\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Twenty Six Togolese nationals arrested for attempting to stage an unlawful demonstration in Accra over the political\u00a0crisis in their country\u00a0are expected to be arraigned today [Monday].
