{"id":362694,"date":"2017-10-18T17:38:51","date_gmt":"2017-10-18T17:38:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=362694"},"modified":"2017-10-18T17:38:51","modified_gmt":"2017-10-18T17:38:51","slug":"construction-of-fuel-stations-ongoing-despite-presidents-order","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=362694","title":{"rendered":"Construction of fuel stations ongoing despite President&#8217;s order"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Construction works are ongoing at some of petrol stations in the Ashanti Region, despite a presidential fiat ordering the temporary cessation\u00a0of the construction of facilities intended for use as gas or petrol\/diesel retail\u00a0outlets.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Citi News<\/strong>\u00a0sighted construction work vigorously ongoing at a Unity Oil filling station, located at Krofrom, a suburb of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.<\/p>\n<p>The supervisors said they were not aware of any directive to stop work, and its\u00a0management maintained that all requirements for the construction had been met.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-362963\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/fuel-station-construction-ashanti-region-1.jpg\" alt=\"fuel-station-construction-ashanti-region-1\" width=\"600\" height=\"394\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-362977\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/848123a3-12c6-4da2-9ab6-47b7f405f573.jpg\" alt=\"848123a3-12c6-4da2-9ab6-47b7f405f573\" width=\"600\" height=\"413\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At Parkoso in the Asokore Mampong Municipality, a new Nasona Oil fuel station was being constructed, notably in a\u00a0waterlogged area.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Recently, there have been explosions in the country. It happened at the Atomic junction in Accra so definitely, I have cause to worry,\u201d a resident of Krofrom said, as he expressed his fears to <strong>Citi News<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This resident said he thought the government \u201cshould come out with strict rules governing the siting of filling stations. If they do that, I think the explosions will come down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-362965\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/fuel-station-construction-ashanti-region-3.jpg\" alt=\"fuel-station-construction-ashanti-region-3\" width=\"611\" height=\"394\" \/><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_362962\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-362962\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-362962 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/fuel-station-construction-ashanti-region-4.jpg\" alt=\"fuel-station-construction-ashanti-region-4\" width=\"600\" height=\"434\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-362962\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Construction work at a new Nasona Oil fuel station<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As far as the enforcement of the directive from the President is concerned, officials of the\u00a0Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have said they will soon begin to take action against such stations.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel Oteng, the Ashanti Regional Director of the EPA, however said he was unaware of the stations <strong>Citi News <\/strong>visited.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are working hand in hand to make sure that directive is carried out, so if they are listening, I am sure that the whole Ghana, everybody has heard it now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He noted the EPA,\u00a0the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council, and the National Petroleum Authority (NPA),\u00a0were among the outfits that would\u00a0be helping with the enforcement of the directive.<\/p>\n<p>Following the Atomic Gas Explosion that killed at least 7 people and injured 132 in Accra, Government after a crucial cabinet meeting, announced a number of directives, about ten of them, geared towards sanitizing the fuel distribution and retail sector, to improve safety and save more lives.<\/p>\n<p>One of the decisions as approved by the President, was an immediate<span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/10\/13\/construction-of-new-fuel-stations-halted-by-govt\/\"> cessation of the construction<\/a><\/strong><\/span> of new fuel stations, to allow the NPA and its allied agencies, to carry out a proper audit of all the facilities.<\/p>\n<p>The President also ordered the <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/10\/13\/close-down-high-risk-fuel-stations-in-30-days-nana-addo\/\">closure of all high-risk fuel stations<\/a><\/strong><\/span> within 30-days.<\/p>\n<p>The President also ordered the implementation of the <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/10\/13\/implement-cylinder-circulation-program-nana-addo-orders\/\">Cylinder Re-circulation Model <\/a><\/strong><\/span>of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) distribution within a year.<\/p>\n<p>The module, proposed by the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), will ensure that LPG filling points are sited out of densely populated areas and commercial centres.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Suspending construction of fuel stations \u2018illegal\u2019 \u2013 Ayariga warns<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A former Minister of Environment, Science and Technology, Mahama Ayariga, believes government may be <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/10\/13\/suspending-construction-of-fuel-stations-illegal-ayariga-warns\/\">infringing on the rights of some fuel distributors<\/a><\/strong><\/span> following the directive to halt the construction of petrol\/diesel and\u00a0LPG filling points\u00a0until further notice.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>By: Hafiz Tijani\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Construction works are ongoing at some of petrol stations in the Ashanti Region, despite a presidential fiat ordering the temporary cessation\u00a0of the construction of facilities intended for use as gas or petrol\/diesel retail\u00a0outlets.
