{"id":356405,"date":"2017-09-23T16:05:36","date_gmt":"2017-09-23T16:05:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=356405"},"modified":"2017-11-10T11:12:22","modified_gmt":"2017-11-10T11:12:22","slug":"ndc-praises-mahama-atta-mills-for-itlos-victory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=356405","title":{"rendered":"NDC praises Mahama, Atta Mills for ITLOS victory"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The National Democratic Congress (NDC), views the \u00a0International Tribunal of the Law of the Sea\u2019s <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/09\/23\/ghana-wins-maritime-dispute-case-against-ivory-coast\/\">judgment in favor of Ghana<\/a><\/strong><\/span> in the maritime dispute with C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire, as the fruits of the foresight and strong leadership of former President John Mahama, and late President John Evans Atta Mills.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, the NDC acknowledged \u201cPresident Mahama\u2019s courage in launching the ITLOS case despite concerns that this could be misinterpreted by our neighbors as a hostile act and that Ghana could lose the case at ITLOS.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;rvx25R2BpB9IXoHuPuePPKwSDV80wmTN&#8221;]The NDC said President Mahama withstood pressure to withdraw the case, which started in 2014, demonstrating awareness of the fact \u201cprotracted bilateral negotiations posed a\u00a0greater danger to our bilateral relations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe NDC is proud to have played a leadership role in securing this legal victory and securing these important resources for the country,\u201d the statement added.<\/p>\n<p>The ITLOS Chamber in a unanimous decision on Saturday held that, there has not been any violation on the part of Ghana on C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire\u2019s maritime boundary.<\/p>\n<p>The Chamber rejected C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire\u2019s argument that Ghana\u2019s coastal lines were unstable.<\/p>\n<p>The NDC congratulated the judges of the Special Chamber \u201con their comprehensive and clear analysis of the issues and on a fair ruling\u201d and congratulated the governments of Ghana and Cote d\u2019Ivoire for seeing this dispute through \u201cpeaceably and in a brotherly spirit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The opposition party added that, the ITLOS ruling represented a victory for pan-African collaboration, diplomacy, and international rule of law.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur two countries have managed a potentially divisive and even explosive dispute with great calm, maturity, and wisdom.\u00a0 We can now put this dispute behind us and look forward to many years of continued collaboration in shipping, fishing, oil and gas and other subsea resource development between our countries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Find below the full statement<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC CONGRESS<\/p>\n<p>STATEMENT ON THE RULING OF INTERNATIONAL TRIBUNAL FOR THE LAW OF THE SEA IN THE MARITIME BORDER DELIMITATION BETWEEN GHANA AND LA COTE D\u2019IVOIRE<\/p>\n<p>The International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) this morning delimited the maritime border between Ghana and la Cote d\u2019Ivoire.\u00a0 Substantially the court confirmed Ghana\u2019s historical position \u2013 a legal victory for Ghana. The NDC congratulates the judges of the Special Chamber on their comprehensive and clear analysis of the issues and on a fair ruling.\u00a0 We congratulate the governments of Ghana and of La Cote d\u2019Ivoire for seeing this dispute through peaceably and in a brotherly spirit.\u00a0 We also congratulate the Ghanaian legal and technical team and their support staff of their hard and very impressive work.<\/p>\n<p>The ITLOS ruling also represents a victory for pan-African collaboration, diplomacy, and international rule of law.\u00a0 Our two countries have managed a potentially divisive and even explosive dispute with great calm, maturity, and wisdom.\u00a0 We can now put this dispute behind us and look forward to many years of continued collaboration in shipping, fishing, oil and gas and other subsea resource development between our countries.<\/p>\n<p>We would be remiss if we did not pay tribute to the late President John Evans Atta Mills who foresaw the danger that a prolonged maritime border dispute posed for the development and security of our two sister countries and West Africa. Prof Mills established the permanent Maritime Border Secretariat. He tasked the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation, to resource MBS so it could attract and deploy Ghanaian expertise and develop our national strategy for resolving the dispute.<\/p>\n<p>We acknowledge President Mahama\u2019s courage in launching the ITLOS case despite concerns that this could be misinterpreted by our neighbours as a hostile act and that Ghana could lose the case at ITLOS.
